Smoking fail: Holiday edition

Every year around this time I make a spicy chex mix to snack on. I ran into some recipes for smoked Chex mix recently and was intrigued. There's several recipes out there so it seemed pretty common. Should turn out fine I thought.
Using a masterbuilt electric, I loaded a small amount of hickory (mistake) in the tray. Just a few chips and set the pan in the smoker for 10 minutes and then planned to move it to the oven. I tried a bite and my gosh was it gross. Hickory was way too harsh a smoke. Should have known to use a milder wood but it's what I had on hand. The peanuts and cashews were at least salvageable and weren't overwhelmed by the smoke.
Anyway, here's a recipe that recommends using Apple if anyone cares to try it and let me know if I should try again

Can’t tell what happened here.

When I first got my MasterBuilt, I ruined a few pieces of meat using Hickory. Now I stick with Pecan mixed with fruit wood on everything. You get a subtle wood flavor without choking on smoke.

Gas leak/explosion? Looks like gas grill on far side. Line to it probably leaked and blew out wall below the bricks.

On thanksgiving afer finishing turkey, 2 butts and a brisket my SIL asked ne to warm a 20lbs mac and cheese as they were running behind inside so I threw it in the smoker and went to get a beer and got distracted by my 2 year old grandson wanting a 4 wheeler ride in the yard.
Apparently one of my brothers decided it would heat much faster at º400 and cranked up the smoker, I quickly noticed a very large smoke plume and went to investigate and found the temp was far higher than the thermometer would read which is º650 and panicked thinking the pellet hopper was soon to go up in flames due to the raging grease fire.
Got it all put out in short order and every one was amazed at the taste of the smoked mac and cheese.
Sometimes victory can be pulled from the jaws of defeat.

There are few things in life that piss me off more than someone fricking with the temperature of something I’m cooking.

It was his wife's giant arse pan of mac and cheese and I admit I may have cracked a smile when she lit his arse up.
