I tried Smoking Aces today for lunch. I ordered the brisket plate with sides of baked beans and potato salad. The brisket and sauce side was pretty good, and the meat had a nice smoke ring on it. The beans tasted like they came straight from a can and the potato salad tasted like something from a grocery store deli. It wasn't bad potato salad, but it wasn't anything special. I may return, but I will have to try new side options.

Probably was in both cases.

Doing bbq right takes so much time and effort to do, I don't judge them by their sides.

That's a big pet peeve of mine. Getting good BBQ and having the sides fall way below mediocrity.

I do judge places by their beans. A bbq place should have good beans. Beans are not hard at all and say a lot about the place. Locally I think the Joint has the best Beans.

Oddly Voodoo BBQ has really good sides (don't love their beans though) yet meh BBQ (not as bad as Saucy's though)

Opposite of what you are reporting here.

I tried Aces one time. He was closing so he gave us a ton of food. I enjoyed it, best BBQ I had in BR since Podnuh's.
