we have no true cajun restaurants here either

This one has really amazed me...I would love a Cafe Vermillionville or Prejean's type place in BR...when I have friends in town for games, they request exactly that for their one BR meal.

On the flip, besides three GREAT cajun places (Kpaul's, Cochon, Bon Ton) in NOLA, we have nothing more really. Although I would throw KPaul's against any Lafayette restaurant. THis is a real weak spot for both BR and NOLA.

PIMP your point about the tourists is very much on target - I'm with you that they have not only spent the money on the food in NOLA but then gone home and told everybody about it, hence a significant reason that the restaurant scene in NOLA has survived the Katrina aftermath. Without a rebound on the tourism front, a lot of restaurants with proud and long traditions would have closed because the population alone can't afford to save them all by eating out 5 nights a week....

i don't really think cajun as much as i do creole when i think of NOLA .. not too many thick cajun accents running around the big easy, despite what hollywood thinks .. remember that movie with dennis quaid and ellen barkin ?? quaid was a new orleans cop with a pea soup thick cajun accent ...

I would kill for some Prejean's gumbo or corn and crab bisque tonight.

KPaul's has just as good gumbo, but you can't just walk in there on any given night. Prejean's is cheap casual cajun fare that you can just go for the hell of it.

eelsu, how do you mean?

I think if someone opens up an independent restaurant in BR they have to be very good right away; if not people will go back to what they know, and for a good number of people thats some kind of chain.

At the same time I think there is a strong demand for new faces and good food - even mediocre restaurants in Baton Rouge have long waits on Fri/Sat nights - so if someone did open up something quality it would do well.

I agree, but I would like a couple more great cajun places...KPaul, Cochon, and Bon Ton don't fit that Prejean's mold that I like in Lafayette.

I agree completely but the expansion and growth are directly attributed to people coming to NOLA from all over the world and spreading the word - its the best asset the NOLA restaurant business has from a purely business plan standpoint.

Correct...all restaurants outside the downtown area do not depend on tourist dollars...thats a ridiculous assertion. There are many restaurants downtown that would still be here too...Galatoire's is too beloved to ever die. THe COurt of Two Sisters on the other hand would die without the tourists.

In the year or two following Katrina, hardly and tourists were coming down and the NOLA restaurant scene was experiencing a huge rebirth with places like Iris and Cochon opening up and almost all of our beleoved establishments coming back with huge success. No doubt the tourists play a role in many downtown place, but I assure you Clancy's, Dante's Kitchen or One do not depend on tourist dollars.

Sheer parody

"I choose to ignore you" -the common response when someone has taken your lunch money and left you standing at the curb.

This board is rife with posters from New Orleans bashing Baton Rouge. You seem to believe that you have some Divine Right to go unchallenged with your simplistic observations. That is why others here speak of your arrogance. Not to be mean, but because it is an observed trait. It rankles you that others have opinions...

There is at least ten of you on every board. You have your narrative, you stick to it with blind obediance and you get angry and shrill when challenged.

Yats believe these false little orthodoxies just like people of every other city. I believe the residents of NOLA seek solace in their food, because a sober appraissal of their "real" situation would be utterly depressing. A little realism on my part, does not equal an "attack". It is an opinion, not warfare. Quit your crying, you delicate flower of lawyer, and be a man.

I agree that this is very likely, which is why it is all the more frustrating that this does not occur.

A nice Baton Rouge hidden gem out in the burbs...

Maison Lacour and chef Mike Jetty.

There are many more of these places then you guys acknowledge.
Maybe the solution is spending your dollar here rather than driving to NOLA as we all do.

Also, the "take away the tourists" comments are ridiculous. They come here because New Orleans is an interesting, historical city with original food and music. New Orleans has EARNED these tourism dollars through years of creative orginalism and preservation of our history and culture. When other cities tour history down, we preserved it...and that makes us interesting and unique in America. There are a million Perkins Rowe's in America...how many Magazine Streets or Royal Streets are there?

We earned this reputation so we deserve the tourism dollars...yes, they contribute to our restaurant scene...success breeds success.

Welcome back to the discussion...I am glad you are done with your personal attacks and plan on contributing something intelligent to this discussion.

What you mentioned is likely one of several solutions that could help enhance the BR dining scene. How much more could it be helped on a daily basis though by people choosing local over chain? College kids aside, of course.

Maison Lacour is on my list to go to as well as LA Laginappe...both seem like good places (I hope better than Juban's).

K-Pauls is fun. Too bad you have a damn good chance of getting gacked on the way to your car.

That is the flip side to what New Orleans has "earned".

Nevermind, I thought you could converse about food intelligently.

Yeh, let me tell you walking on Royal and Chartres near Jackson Square is really scary.

There you go again. Why even comment on ANY restaurants in Baton Rouge ? What point are you trying to make ? No one disagrees about NOLA being a food mecca.

You seem to relish the opportunity to disparage anything and everything Baton Rouge. Why is that ? I am leaning toward the point that LSUPIMP made concerning the insecurities of the NOLA folk, ie,...at least NOLA has good food, if nothing else.

You should quit your day job and become a critic. But that wouldn't pay as much as posting here while billing clients to pay for your gastronomical pursuits.

I don't know what you are smoking. Besides from Jubans being in a strip mall, it is excellent food.
