They are both overrated, IMO. Decent burgers, but didn't live up to the hype.
This is how I felt after trying both. There was a line out the door for weeks when Shake Shack first opened in Austin. I finally tried it and was really disappointed. There is a food truck directly across the street with a burger that blows them away as well as a number of other local chains that have better burgers.

I like Five Guys more than both the others. Those 3 to me are the "elevated" fast food burgers
Completely agree.
Haven't tried Smashburger yet. What's anyone's take on them?

Shake Shack is just ok. The one at Minute Maid is surprisingly good given its location in a major league ballpark.

Honestly, it's been years since I've had In-N-Out, but we have a shake shack near our house and that place is amazing.

had both, prefer INO just because of nostalgia's sake. Growing up in North County, we smashed that place all the time after dance's in highschool

Here’s what the results found: Five Guys was named the Burger Restaurant Brand of the Year by the people surveyed, beating In-N-Out Burger, which had held the title for two years. The next best-ranked burger spots were Shake Shack, Wendy’s, Culver’s, Whataburger, McDonald’s, SONIC America’s Drive-In, Smashburger, and Steak ‘n Shake.
