So last week I got a few griddles tops for my Camp Chef stove and today I coated them in frying oil and baked for two hours at 400. They came out sticky rather than smooth.

Did I miss something? Usually a just make a bunch of bacon in new cast iron and don't do a formal seasoning, so I'm a rook today.

Either too much oil, or the oil you used had too low of a smokepoint for 400

Scrub it down with hot water and soap. Rinse with water until all soap is gone. Once it is dry, coat with Crisco, wipe off the excess and put in oven upside down for up to an hour. I set the temp from 200 - 250°. Wipe out excess oil, cool and store until next use. Repeat until you like the results.

I do this after each use, but leave it in the oven for a shorter period of time.

thanks!

We are closing up camp (sad friggin day) so it's a next year problem at this point.

Camp is far up north and when the bad weather rolls in, we get the heck out for the winter. Ready for south Louisiana weather again.

I use grapeseed oil, at the suggestion of someone here. I used to just use vegetable oil, pour it in and wipe it out until almost dry, and in a 225-250 degree oven for 30 minutes or so, then cut if off and allow it to cool. Repeat a time or two and it gave a nice coating. The grapeseed oil is easier to work with, and gives a much better nonstick surface.
