WHat kind did he bring you, etc.? First thing, though, is to fire it up on high, burn some wood through it for a few hours, let it cool, rub the wire racks down with a light coat of cooking oil, and fire it back up for a couple hours.

Ah ha! I got a new 44" model two weeks ago with the glass door from cabelas. Well, season it up and get to cooking!
Buy an amaze n pellet tray or you'll be opening that door an feeding that beast every 20 minutes. In the short term, get heavy aluminum foil, wrap large quantity of wood chips in it double wrapped, and poke 4-5 small holes (very small) in the top of it and throw it where the pellet tray is. That'll give you 45 minutes to an hours worth of smoke so it will cut down on your wood feeding.

Start with a boston butt. Start with google, read a few articles and start smoking. Best way to learn is to start experimenting.

Agree 100% they are impossible to mess up and will give you a boost in confidence as well as a few skills that will translate over to other cuts of meat.
One you get the hang of your smoker and how it cooks along with cooking by internal temperature you are set to move on to Brisket and beyond.
