Got DAMN I've been longing for this!

It's just like an old school New Orleans king cake ... sweet bread, some colored sugar on top ... the Mexicans apparently also top it with candied fruits ... pecans, cherries, figs ... I dig it though.

I can't stand what king cake in New Orleans has become: gluttonous, cream cheese filled, sloppy arse, icing drenched cinnamon rolls shaped into an oval.

If you want a king cake of yesteryear, go to a Mexican bakery and look for a "Rosca de Reyes" ... problem is, they only eat them on January 6, and they're decorated in green and red.

I'm going back later to see if they can make me one for tomorrow in purple, green and gold ... and if so, if I can pre-order one for every Friday and Mardi Gras day.

I feel the same way about the gloopy, too damn sweet modern king cakes...but Tartine Bakery's king cake is an old-school, not too sweet, unfilled ring of delicious. Try it out when you can't get a Mexican one.

Tartine ... is that the spot uptown off of Broadway, almost at the river? ... couple blocks from Audubon Park and the zoo?

I used Emeril's recipe for a king cake back in 2009. My parents told me it was the closest they've tasted since they ate them as kids in New Orleans.

You're making me wish I was back in Birmingham. So many Mexican markets that would have something like this.

Yes. According to Instagram, Tartine started baking king cakes yesterday. Pic: LINK

I'd love to check them out, but it's a bit out my way and I'm not sure the drive is worth it.

I live in Atlanta.

That's part of the reason I'm excited about this find (although mainly because of the cake tasting like the old school king cakes that have been abandoned). Publix and Kroger sell king cakes out here, but it's trash cinnamon rolls.

Just realized something else ...

... they have THREE plastic babies in this thing.

Not sure how that works for "Rosca de Reyes" parties, lol.

I need to make sure if I get one customized with Mardi Gras colors that they only put one baby.

I saw one today for the first time and must say I was unimpressed. It looked like a decorated loaf of bread, really dense and unappealing. I'm there are better versions but is that par for the course?

Agreed that today's King Cakes have lost their way but you can still get a traditional cake if you want and what I saw today was terrible...

I'm not a big sweets person but a piece of good, traditional, King Cake warmed in the toaster oven with a pat of butter on top is something I miss about home...

Was it baked in house, or one of the mass produced ones? Bimbo brand makes them, but I would assume comparing that to the fresh baked ones would be like comparing a little Debbie to a fresh baked cupcake or brownie.

That being said, the one I bought did look like decorated bread, but that "bread" was a sweet bread, or brioche, just like the king cakes I grew up on... and it was delicious.

That's why I mentioned that I wanted to get one decorated New Orleans style. Underneath the different decor was a great king cake instead of a damn cinnamon roll.

Looked like it was from a small bakery near my office in North Houston. It is quite possible it was better than it looked but like I said, it appeared to be a decorated brick of bread so I didn't try it. If another comes around, I'll give it a shot and report back...

I hope it's as good as the one I had here in Atlanta. It had green and red candied fruits (like in a fruit cake, but in strips) draped over the top, sections of crusted sugar, candied figs, cherries, and pecans.

It tasted better than it looked I guess.

I've heard of 2 babies in the mexican cake. Whoever gets the baby has to have a big party that includes serving tamales and pazole. 2 babies let 2 people split the work and cost of the party. Maybe the 3 babies represents the 3 wise men (kings)? And lets 3 people split the cost of the party.

I assumed it was the 3 wise men as well, as they're the reason it's called a king cake.

Sounds like a Mexican king cake party gets down, with tamales and such being served.

Hell, my first memories of a king cake party are eating a slice of McKenzie's on my desk in elementary school served on a brown paper towel.

Mexicans party down at the drop of a sombrero. Huge parties in my hood every weekend......and the Quinceañera shindigs are crazy.

Well aware, my friend. My neighbors here in Atlanta are Mexican. Dude gets down. He's building a damn cantina in his backyard as we speak, and to be honest, ... I want in.

I respected the hell outta the guy the first time I saw him light his charcoal pit ... with his propane roofing torch.
