My wife and 7 year old daughter will be heading up I-59 through Hattiesburg and Meridian on our way to Birmingham in a couple of weeks for a long weekend. I know that's a lot of area to cover but, are there any can't miss restaurants or places to pick up specialty items that you can't find in south Louisiana?

If by chance you want to come back on I-55, there’s a cool old butcher shop in Crystal Springs, MS called Wilson’s Meat House.

I doubt that we will be coming back that way. It's just out of our way but, that may be an option the next time that I'm headed to Jackson.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Are you good for Birmingham plans?

I'm still looking for restaurants that are kid friendly and other places that may carry specialty items that I can't get here in Louisiana.

For restaurants, Google the words Birmingham Restaurant Tigerdroppings (or site:Tigerdroppings.com ) and you should find plenty of threads with plenty of suggestions. Same trick works for towns along the way like Hattiesburg, Laurel or Meridian.
For specialty items, that's a bit more tricky depending on what you and the family are hunting, but the first place I would point you is Alabama Goods in Homewood.
Pro-tip 1: Niki's West just north of downtown is an old-school "meat-and-three" (cafeteria in the best sense of that word) that is run by their Greek owners with military precision. The place is huge... a few kids won't phase them a bit.
Pro-tip 2: if "specialty goods" includes beer, send the family up to see Vulcan on Red Mountain and hit Hop City in Pepper Place. Miles and miles of beer. Wine too.
Enjoy your time here in our little town. Lots of LSU and La ex-pats do too.

If you hit Meridian during the day, take your kids to the Denzel Carousel at Highland Park.
Here is information
You guys will enjoy looking at several million dollars worth of hand carved wood horses, tigers, giraffes, etc. and ride the thing. It is the only Denzel in the original wooden building in the world.
Go to the Mississippi Arts and entertainment center
2155 Front Street
Sciple's mill is 35 miles north of meridian - oldest stone ground water mill in the USA (1763) Buy Stone ground grits while you are there.
I have a post on it on F&D Board somewhere.
Here
There is a very good Thai restaurant in Meridian
Thai Krai

We may have to try Niki's West. That looks like a place that a lot of the locals would eat at. People can say what they want but I still like Piccadilly on occasion.
We probably won't go up to Red Mountain because my wife and daughter are deathly afraid of heights but, I will definitely keep this in mind. That looks like a lot of fun.

This would be perfect for my daughter but, I don't think we will be able to make it because of their hours. It looks like they are only open on Saturdays from 1:00-5:00 right now.

This is the kind of specialty type items I'm looking for. You can't get this kind of stuff in a grocery store. I will definitely try to stop by and pick up some grits. It's a little out of the way but, I guess the best things are worth a little extra work. I appreciate the suggestions.

I definitely put in work to get to the mill. The first road I took had a bridge out before you could get to the mill so we turned around and went the alternate route that the GPS told me. It took me on some old gravel logging roads for about 30 minutes but we made it. It was closed so that was a little disappointing but, the honor box was open. I picked up a couple bags of grits and some cornmeal. I’ll pick up some shrimp on the way home tomorrow and probably cook shrimp and grits on Sunday. You could tell this was a really old place which I liked.
