Stone Ground Grits from Sciples Mill in DeKalb, MS (Photo heavy)

I thought I would share some of the story about this historic landmark in DeKalb, MS. I posted this a few years back and it disappeared in the great photobucket tragedy.
This is Sciple's mill, the oldest continuously operated commercial water mill in the USA (1790 - present day).
This link gives an address and phone number so you can order Cornmeal, grits, fish fry mix, flour or whatever from them. To get your corn ground, you must deliver it to the mill yourself. However they absolutely will grind your grain for you. I think the miller's cut is 1/8, but that might be wrong. There is a photo below that tells what it is - The rate hasn't changed since 1790.
Sciples Mill, operating since 1790
Mill stone is in here
Spare Water Turbine that runs the mill
Mill building beside that brown vehicle. The door is open, so the mill is open.
Spare mill stone
Mr. Sciple - I think the rusted out hole in his pickup door under his elbow is cute.
Mr. Sciple's Son in dark blue t shirt with TV Show "Dirty Jobs" Guy in light blue t shirt
Water gates on Mill pond - water enters mill through that concrete flue chute
The mill also sawed lumber at one time. 4 foot diameter Saw mill blade in in upper right of photo
Some equipment in the past was belt driven on these wheels
Old planting seeder and what looks like a pretty good car jack
Honestly, I think that gear wheel is holding up the building on that corner.
Honor Box and entrance drive to front parking lot
You can order their stuff and have it shipped to you The stone ground grits are special.
Or you can drop by and pick up your order at the honor box outside of the mill
This wheel could use a little love from a wheelwright
Mill pond and water gates.
This is not an outhouse
But they can accommodate your need for relief (Charmin fans should Please note corncobs in middle container)
They carry all sorts of stuff you might need
A little humor
Modern Touches
Need a horse shoe? Hay Fork? Man I loved Grapettes,
Mill Office - See the phone?
Ed (Mr. Sciple) taking a break. As I recall, it was hot that day.
Yep - really real
Corn goes into that funnel at top and mill stone is in the round wooden case. Grits, cornmeal wheat flower, come out the bottom.
Old Mill General Store across road from mill. Now is a "Saturday Night Fever" - happening kind of place - Opry Music Show
If it's not Saturday night, The Opry House is locked up tighter than Bessie's Hat Box
If those Dirt Dobber Nests could talk...
Nice steps up onto the front porch. Been around a while.
I never asked who Eva Grace was, but she must be important. (VIP)

That is awesome. If those pics were posted in black and white with a slight Gaussian blur, I would have guessed they were originals.

Maybe the old fashioned way?
Call Sciples Mill at (601) 743-2295, or send orders to Sciples Mill, Route 4, Box 119, DeKalb, MS 39328.

If the will is strong, I would confirm the process and send payment via your online banking.
I'd love to walk through this place on day though. Just don't make it up that way to Ms very often.

These are that very rare species - Honest people. You could pay them in cash via US Postal service and wait for your delivery by return mail. guess they might barter with you. I never tried, just picked up my stuff and slid cash money into the honor box.

This is very much a destination trip t00f.
Here is how to get there.
Take H-39 North, out of DeKalb,MS. The turn is at Tooney's Texaco. Take a left (west) on Kellis Store Road, maybe 4 miles north of town. Sciple's Mill Road might be the second right on Kellis Store Road (Maybe 2-3 miles west of the H-39 intersection). Turn right on Sciple's Mill Road and go north a half mile. The mill is on the left as you go north, just after you cross Running Tiger Creek.
If you are coming in from Shuqualak. MS (H-45), Take H-39 W to H-21 - Maybe 4 miles. Turn left and bear west on H-21 and then turn left (South) onto Nester Road, then continue on southward when Nester Road changes to Gholson Road at Union Hill Church. Stay on Gholson Road for a few miles, watching for the right turn onto Wilson Road. Turn Right onto Wilson Road And take the second left onto Sciple's Mill Road, and follow it southward to the mill, wich will be on the right, just before you cross Running Tiger Creek.
Enjoy your visit, and remember, It is OK to touch the dust, just don't write in it. Chances are there may be no one at the mill if they aren't milling, but if you want to go inside, just tap the horn a time or two and Mr. Sciple (Ed) will come up and let you in. He is a nice old guy and my belief is he will talk to you as long as you want to chat.
If you are hungry, the Pure Oil Gas Station across from the County Court House in DeKalb, is my #1 favorite place (In the entire World!) to purchase Gas Station Fried Chicken. If you get there between 11:30 and 12:10, they probably will have fried chicken livers too. Also fried gizzards and fried chicken hearts, most days. I can offer no promises if you are later than 12:15. On Fridays, they have pretty good fried Catfish, too. I recommend JoJo Potatoes and diet Dr. Pepper with whatever you get.
