Owners/bosses have that preogative. If the employees don't need the job or the money, they should work somewhere that closes. It's business. If I'm an owner in retail, grocery or restaurant, I'd sure as heck be open on days that I can make a profit. I guess I could close, forego the money and fire a few people, though.
Sometimes, it's just part of the business to be open when you might not want to be, crappy or not. I worked on Christmas Eve in high school and in college. I didn't need the money just for that day, but I sure wanted to keep my job, so I did what I needed to do. I never once thought about being mad at the owner. I worked in retail and in banks.
This is all true and I agree, but not at all what the point was being made was.. or at least how I interpreted it. Someone said they feel bad going to those places on holidays and you said the people working there probably want you there/need you there. I simply wanted to point out that most time, they don't want or need to be there
It's usually people who got stuck there, and therefore, I also feel bad patronizing these places on holidays. That's not to say I haven't before (I stopped at CVS on Christmas last year).. but I do feel bad and I try my hardest not to go. No customers = no reason to be open.
I guess it's a question of ethics vs. business. Sort of like the threads we get about going to a restaurant 5 minutes before closing time. Yes, they are open and you have every right to go there. And as employees of this business, they have no room to make you leave or get angry. That being said, on the customer's end, it's generally considered kind-of a "dick move" (for lack of better words) to do these things.

I recently started working at Shucks on the Levee in the Atrium at the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino. We will be open on Easter and I'm pretty sure I'll be working. For those of you who have eaten there in the past and were disappointed, we are under new management and have made changes to the menu. It isn't a fine dining restaurant, but the food is good and within your price range. If you get seated in my section, I will also guarantee that you get excellent service.
Again, it isn't fine dining, but the quality of the food is very good. They changed the menu as of Sunday night and they added a few new entrees. It's mostly seafood. The menu is online.
I agree 100%

I understand your point, but I've been the boss in business for long enough to know what I need to do to keep people employed.
It also means no money for the business.
In many businesses (not all), this means someone could get their hours cut or lose a job, so boycotting businesses because you don't like the fact that they are open on holidays could cost someone. I just can't see the logic. Not in this day and age with people trying to get jobs.
I get resumes constantly. It's sad when I think of how many.

I don't have kids, so I dont mind working on Easter. As long as I don't have stingy tippers, I'm cool with it. I do feel bad for the people with children that have to work on holidays, but I understand that businesses have to make money.

I read this on the Green Goddess site earlier this week. Made me laugh.
"Dinner is only on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: 6:00pm – 11pm. Yes, we’re now open Wednesday night for dinner!
Last Dinner Seating at 11pm.
We won’t give you the stinkeye if you come at 11pm. Honest!"
The last part is italicized on the site.

Our kitchen closes at 10pm but we are open until 11.
I dont mind it, except for when I get shitty tips. As long as I'm making money I don't care how long we stay open.

I think restaurants should maybe reword their hours to keep people from coming at the last minute if it's a problem. Maybe like the Green Goddess..."last seating at 11 pm" or "kitchen closes at 10, restaurant closes at 11". Of course, if someone arrives at 9:50, I guess there would still be complaining.

I like the idea of a "seating time" closure.
My work closes entirely at 9PM (as posted), but we have a rule where once it's past 9:00, anyone who is already in there and hasn't ordered still gets to order.. the kitchen doesn't just magically shut down at 9. And if a new party comes in at 9 and there are still tables who haven't ordered yet already in there, the new party is allowed to be seated because the kitchen has not yet technically began closing.
If a new party comes in at 9 and there are no open tickets in the kitchen, they are not seated since it is the closing time and the kitchen is beginning to close down.
This is true too. We are "open" (as in, you can sit in our space) until the last table leaves. If that's midnight, so be it. As long as they aren't trying to order more things from the kitchen that closes at 9, we would never force them to leave. That being said, I should hope no one would sit in there until midnight when we close at 9

That's basically how we are. We shut the doors at 10. If they are already seated they can order. We don't let people in after 10.
Era: I think we say that the kitchen closes at 10 to discourage people from ordering after 10.
