For Winston-Salem-
More casual:
The Porch (tacos, etc.)
Burke Street Pizza
Sweet Potatoes (soul food)
Filling Station
"nicer":
Spring House
Mozelles
I'm admittedly foggy on the more upscale stuff. I haven't been back in a couple years but from what I understand their restaurant scene has been rapidly evolving.
I know said you've seen beer recs, but you need to drink at Old Winston Social Club on Burke right across from Burke Street Pizza. Great bar.
Seeing as you'll be in North Carolina you should also acquaint yourself with the Cookout menu in advance. Youre welcome in advance

The fast food place?
They have those here in VA but I've never been to one of them

Durham—The restaurant in the Washington Duke Inn on campus is very good. There was also a Burger place downtown that I thought was cool. I think it was a burger/brewery.

Looked sort of generic from the outside. Guess I'll have to check one out soon

Is casual a euphemism for low cost?
Cause you can go into just about any restaurant casually dressed and get served. (Assuming you are not wearing a red MAGA hat in the liberal locals - then who knows.)

Not really
More concerned with attire
I'm on the road and don't have a lot of dress clothes. Work attire for me is usually jeans and a button up. I really don't feel like buying slacks just to go to a restaurant.

While this is true I'd like to be appropriately dressed
There are some restaurants in NOLA that I would never walk into with jeans

These are some Raleigh places we like:
Firebird’s Wood Fired Grill - off of Six Forks Road at North Hills Mall
Winston’s - on Fall of the Neuse Road
42nd Street Oyster Bar - near downtown
Cafe Luna - E Hargett St, downtown
Red, Hot & Blue - Memphis style bbq, everything is usually good except the brisket
None of those are outrageously expensive, unless you run up a big bar bill. I’ve probably worn shorts and a pull over shirt into most of them but I’m old and don’t care. The one exception is Cafe Luna but I would wear jeans there.
The Angus Barn is expensive but I think wearing jeans there would be ok. It looks like a big barn and they have guns on the wall.
I have been told there are some good Italian places in Wake Forest but I have not been.
Don’t know much about Durham but I did just learn of a place in Hillsborough called LaPlace Louisiana Cookery that has Cajun/creole food. I have not been but the menu looks good. They have a Sunday brunch and we drove by recently and folks were lined up out the door. But it is small. Hillsborough is just west of Durham.
There are a bunch of places in downtown Raleigh that the under 30 crowd like and I’m sure jeans would be ok in most if not all of those.

Damn. Thanks for all of the ideas. I'm not worried about running up the bar bill because I'll be staying about 30 minutes away and don't want to be drinking and driving.

Pizzeria Toro in Durham was good when I went a couple of years back. Really liked the spring onion/pistachio pizza that I got.
