Question about owning a grocery store:

What does a grocery store owner's wife do when she goes shopping? Let's say a middle sized store like a Carter's or something. Does she just go fill up her buggy and walk out? Does she have some kind of special card that charges it to the store and then they just don't pay it?
Doesn't it seem weird if she just pays like everyone else? And if she does pay like everyone else does she use coupons? I just can't wrap my mind around this.
Does anyone have first hand knowledge of how this transaction takes place?

When I worked at Lamendola's way back in the day it depended on what they were taking out with them.
There was a book behind the counter that everything would be recorded in that wasn't going across a scanner.
Granted if they wanted a coke or something I think they just went and grabbed a coke. Same for when he made jambalayas, just got the meat and fixins and made the jambalaya. Not sure how they accounted for those.

Pay like everyone else in most cases. The reason is inventory. The store wants to know profit margins, loss rates, and sales figures. Plus some department manager’s might have bonuses tied to sales and profit margins.

I know you're probably right it just feels weird. They already own all the food and now she's gonna pay herself to take it and also pay tax on it. I'm sure you don't want to start a habit of people just walking out with stuff though.

My uncle owns some Piggly Wiggly stores in Alabama, he and my aunt both pay for groceries when they get them. My aunt uses coupons, but my uncle doesn't take the time to use them and only does when someone has them at the register. It's better for them to add their own groceries into the total sales for incentives from the Piggly Wiggly warehouse than it would be to take free food

No they don't. The corporation owns all the food. If they simply walked out without paying, they'd be stealing from the corporation.
Unless it's a sole proprietorship... which nobody in their right mind would run a grocery store as.

That makes sense. Maybe this would be more for a small grocery store. Either way I guess it’s not that important.

If you owned a place like kartchners, you could write it off as business expense I imagine... serving clients, company meetings, etc
