if this thread was "to marinade a steak or not" then the responses would seem correct and on topic

this is a thread about marinade on steaks. the guy was curious about marinades, so he made a thread about them

Be careful guys, this thread's being monitored by SFP to show the OT our pretentiousness because the majority of food boarders don't believe in marinating a good cut

Oh good Lord. Talk about attention whores.

Hey, do me a favor. Ask SFP how his jambalaya turned out. A guy posted a very good recipe for him, and it turns out SFP never responded to him after the poster gave every bit of effort to help the guy out, a very reasonable and well thought out alternative for SFP. One would think a person with such an interest in making such a difficult dish would be interested enough to address that, but the thread is about to fade away into obscurity as we speak.

You know what that tells me? It tells me that SFP has no real interest in it. He's just full of it.

I just don't think one truly enjoys a good steak if you feel the needs to put all sorts of seasonings on it.

Well that's debatable, b/c you can't say that adding good flavor is always a bad thing.

But besides that, I'm sure this guy has watched FOOD network and knows about the "salt and pepper" thing.

It's an opinion, those are always debatable.

thanks MDT I didn't mean to hijack that recipe but when reading the thread i started thinking of an ingredient to add and when plantains hit me i just went worked through my own jam method and substituted ingredients that complement plantains. hopefully it showed people that recipes are not important but cooking method is. what started as a joke actually turned into something pretty good. I think i will do this more often

If you have a good cut, you don't need a marinade. Salt and pepper work just fine.

I think a splash of Dale's adds to, but does not overpower, a steak's flavor.

I splash it on right before I put it on the grill, so I wouldn't even call my use of it a marinade as much as a basting sauce.

Dale's will make a good steak taste like beef jerky.

I rub it down in Olive Oil
add Allegro, lower in sodium
Cheap red wine
Black pepper
Lawry's

Not too heavy handed on any of these, the protein is the star.

I don't know in what context you've had it, but I've used it countless times and never, ever, tasted any "beef jerky" taste from it, especially as far as just using a tablespoon or so right before grilling and/or using it as a basting sauce.

A good quality steak doesn't need 7 different seasonings and a marinade. But if that's how you like it, knock yourself out. I use sea salt and cracked black pepper. Sear it with the coals all the way up then move it to the back away from the coals to let it finish slowly.

this guy knows what he's doing

ETA: and just to appease SFP, if i'm sitting there with a crap cut of meat i'll marinade for an hour or two with salt, pepper, garlic powder, lemon juice, red wine, worcheshire, and some onion slices.
