Don't give up on gumbo so fast..
I think Surgery might be easier than giving up Gumbo.
Learn to make a dry (oil less) roux.
Put 2 cups of flour on an ovenproof pan and place in an oven 2 350 degrees for 1-1/2 hours stiring ocassionaly till browned..
shrimps no problem, or use chicken breast and turkey sasauge.
Blue Cross has a pretty good heart healthy cookbook " Eating Well, Living Well"
Has some great heart healthy recipes from Louisiana's top chefs..
good luck...
and here's a webiste you might check out as well.

dont forget about physical activity; i would say it is just as if not more important to any dietary modifications. Congrats on kicking the smoking habit; it is the most important part in improving your health

My dad had one back in 1986. He explored alternative medicine including a treatment called chelation, which he's sure extended his life much longer than the doctors said it would.
I'll never forget a couple of days after it happened, the doc came into his hospital room and told him, "it's really nothing serious, you just had a mild heart attack." My dad grabbed him, pulled him close and yelled "DIDN'T FEEL Fing MILD TO ME DAMMIT."

Chelation therapy has been around for a while to help with certain heavy metal poisons, but as an aid for cardiovascular disease the effectiveness is, well, disputed. The thinking apparently is that, yes, chelation patients do tend to do better but usually it's because they are also suddenly doing the dietary and lifestyle changes too.
Speaking of dietary changes, one can also look at Esselstyn's book (both the father's and the son's). Dr. Esselstyn (the father) comes across as a bit evangelical but some of the recipes are fairly tasty and there's no question they're good for you.

Make your own chips. Buy a stack of corn tortillas, cut them in 1/4 or 1/8, bake them at 400 for 10 minutes or until crispy. You can add your own salt/salt substitute.
I do this frequently. Bonus: they taste far better than Doritos.

All these responses are great! All of you gave excellent food for thought...I'm trying to avoid the knee-jerk reactions. I've been eating "light" for a week now, and I'm ready to experiment when I get paid again. I've bookmarked the websites recommended and am itching to try some of the Mediterranean dishes.
Homemade chips and salsa or guacamole will be on the agenda for the Saints game this weekend!
Thanks!
