Pesto-EDIT in OP-Washing Lots of Basil Without Bruising It

Planning to make a lot of pesto as my basil plants are so heavy, they're starting to bend and break.
Some articles say not to freeze it with the cheese because it will go rancid or change the flavor. Some say it's fine with the cheese.
I've already bought a lot of cheese to grate for the pesto and this will be the first time I'm freezing it. Anyone have experience one way or the other?
ETA: I made a good bit of pesto which took a LOT of basil. I've normally had no trouble washing basil, but I haven't used this much at one time. I rinsed the stems and put them on layers of paper towels with layers on top and sort of rolled them up a bit to dry before I pulled off the leaves. In minutes, a many leaves leaves bruised pretty badly. Anyone have any tricks to washing a lot at once without bruising it? Salad spinner?

Never had it go bad with cheese in it.

I freeze it completely made (with the cheese) all the time, usually in smaller portions for 1-2 servings or to use for pizza sauce. Never had a problem with it--it usually tastes close to the same as the original.
I do add a thin layer of olive oil on top of the pesto in the container though.

Why worry about bruising it if you're going to make pesto? It's not like you're washing it to,use as a fresh garnish. You will literally pulverize it within a few minutes of washing.

I used most of it. There were some leaves that were so black I left them out. Sure takes a lot of basil to get 10 cups of packed leaves. I still have a ton of basil in the yard.
I also have a lot of purple basil and thai basil. This has been the best year ever for most of my herbs. Have you made a pesto with purple or thai basil. The purple is delicious.
I was thinking of a thai basil pesto, but I haven't through further about maybe adding a different flavor to it.

I just saw this but I've always frozen with the cheese because what's the point if you don't? More work.
Also I do use a salad spinner. I also cut the stems off. I just like the leaves but that's just me.

I didn't use the stems. I washed the basil on the stems and then removed the leaves. I did use some of the tender stems at the very top of the stems. Those are thin, though.
