Just won a bottle of Opus One 1996 at a wine pull at the Great Forest Park Balloon Race. Wonderful event, by the way, and I love to support The Humane Society. The cork dissolved into the bottle the second the corkscrew touched it. I strained the wine through cheesecloth 3 times to get all the fragments of cork out. I would like to know, if in a blind testing, the average wine lover could distinguish this $250.00 wine from Franciscan Merlot or Rossi Paisano.

I had Opus One and I was not impressed at all. It was not good.

Is it spoiled from exposure due to the rotten cork ?

The average wine lover should be able to tell it's not an Italian country wine, but Merlot and Cabernet are very similar on the palate (opus kne is a blend of those grapes plus the other bordeaux varieties). On the note I would say it's truly much more complex than a Franciscan merlot but at $250 I have always thought there is much more out there to drink instead.

First time I tasted Opus (was a 97), thought it was way overrated and overpriced. Then, someone gave me a 92 as a gift. Superb bottle of wine. As with most high priced wines, the vintage makes a huge difference.
