Another one for the Warehouse district if he's working downtown---or if he has to spend time on the Westbank at the Alario Center practice facility (easier to get across the river if you're already downtown). Lots of 1 BRs in condo buildings with amenities like onsite parking, pool, gym, etc. Downtown has a thriving Saturday farmer's market, the Wednesdays at the Square concert series, art galleries/the Contemporary Arts Center, etc.

Please educate him that NOLA isn't a cajun town, but a creole one. +1 for the Bon Ton (crawfish etouffee), and Cochon will give him a stylized taste of cajun/SW LA flavors.

Thanks for going mean first. I was planning to suggest changing his kids tastes or at least opening his culinary eyes.

I like them in theory, but NOHSC's just don't taste good, IMO.

will definitely indoctrinate as I have more time..need to get him good areas to look at to live in and get him by on food for a couple of days.

thanks for all input.

I am having him stop along the way from Houston at Breaux Bridge for a meal or Poche's in Cecilia

this is assuming he's in his early 20s and has never really ventured out of cajun food and more basic restaurants .. so I would recommend he:

- go to Parkway Bakery for a poboy (at least once a week)

- Cochon Butcher for a Cubano or Gambino sandwich + some boudin and head cheese

- Coop's for jambalaya

- Lilly's, Tan Dinh, Magasin to try out Vietnamese food

also: Eat & Casamento's would probably be up his alley

Agree on Casamento's for fried food. Tell him it's cash only.

Mandina's for a large menu from plates to poboys at a typical neighborhood restaurant. Good place to sample turtle soup.

I love Bon Ton which was suggested. Crawfish bisque, etouffee, crabmeat au gratin, bread pudding...downtown and only open on weekdays and very busy at lunch.

R&O's for a great muffalatta and large menu, as well.

There are literally tons of places and you could use the dining forum to look at restaurants in various areas and the $$ for the cost. Also, look at Tom Fitz's nomenu.com. Has lists of the "best" that aren't necessarily what everyone thinks, but are good guides. He has restaurants listed by location, also. Look at the top of the home page for drop downs.

Pascal's Manale is good for oysters and maybe a few other dishes, but not the BBQ shrimp if that's where you're going with that. He should go to Mr. B's for BBQ shrimp.

Mainly, please tell him not to say "Nawlins". Please.

Restaurant / Favorite Food

There are literally thousands of restaurants in this city and you'll have to be very specific as to what you're looking for.

But:

High End White Tablecloth:
August
Stella!
Le Foret
R'Evolution
Commander's Palace
Galatoire's

High End Bistro:
Coquette (uptown)
Atchafalaya (uptown)
Sylvain (FQ)

"New Orleans Style" Food:
Bon Temps
Ignatius
Mr. B's

Steak:
Mr. John's
Desi Vega's
Ruth's Chris
Charlie's

Seafood:
Casamento's
New Orleans Seafood and Spirits (Bucktown)
The Galley
Drago's (For Charbroiled Oysters ONLY...)

PoBoys:
Parkway
Mahoney's
Killer Poboys
Domilises
Tracey's

Vietnamese:
Pho Tau Bay
Magasin
Lilly's

Brunch:
Atchafalaya
Stanley
Elizabeth's

Neighborhood Style restaurants:
Katie's (MidCity)
Mondo (Lakeview)
R&O's (Bucktown)

Sandwiches:
Cochon Butcher (My favorite)
Wayfare
Milk Bar

Eclectic (more adventurous meals):
ROOT (high end)
Maurepas Foods
3 Muses (live music)

Sushi: (you'll get a list of about 50 for this)
Horinoya
Sushi Brothers
Shogun
Chiba

Pizza:
Tower of Pizza
Ancora (neapolitan style)
Pizza Delicious
Domenica (my personal favorite Italian place)

Other Suggestions:

Rumhouse (Caribbean Taqueria, possibly the most popular restaurant uptown, very cheap tacos, good looking college girls...VERY popular)
The Joint (BBQ)
Sukho Thai
5 Happiness Chinese Restaurant

Specials:
Luke has 25 cent happy hour oysters
Coquette has a 3 course, 20 dollar lunch
Domenica has a great happy hour for pizza and cocktails

Those are just what I'm thinking of off the top of my head.

I go maybe once every 5 weeks. I should have clarified that I meant go once a week until you try all of the poboys that look good to him.
