Kamado Joe XL is my preferred brand. Goodwood Hardware was sold out during the height of the stay-at-home order, so I was forced to branch out. Used Fogo once and was happy with it. Another time all they had was Cajun and it was absolute garbage.

Jealous Devil is terrible, terrible stuff. I think the plastic bag maintains too much moisture in the wood. It burns like shite. I hate to be so negative but everyone associated with this product should be ashamed. It's not easy to find a product that uses packaging that is both detrimental to the product as well as the environment. Fogo is far better stuff.

It is not pretty good. It is terrible. Slightly better than Cowboy brand. Anyone who likes this stuff should try more brands before commenting.

Right on Fogo, wrong on Jealous Devil. It is terrible. You should have stopped before revealing yourself. LOL.

This thread is enlightening. I'm just stepping into charcoal on a kettle. Picked up the Cajun stuff because I was pretty sure I wanted lump and not briquettes but didn't know much past that. I honestly don't know enough to tell how bad or not it is. Does spark some when starting, but that doesn't necessarily bother me. Going to try one of these brands recommended here next bag and see how it compares. Probably run through a few types before I settle on a brand. Convenience will probably play a large factor regardless though.

I haven't looked at Costco yet but someone mentioned they had cowboy but that's apparently not good stuff. What other lump coals do they typically sell?

I don't agree that it's "terrible". It burns ok after it gets going but it did seem to me that it was slower to ignite and takes longer to get going.

My local guy turned me on to Fire and Smoke Society. It's phenomenal.

I've used JD once and it wasn't bad. It was clean, and didn't spark up like the cheaper ones. The only negative was that the chunks weren't very big. It would be fine for grilling burgers/steaks, IMO. But i also haven't had the negative experiences you had with it.

That's a good thing. Means the coal is more dense. KJ Big Block XL is slower to light as well, and is fantastic (outside of the 2 shitty bags i got). Don't confuse slow lighting to poor quality. Poor quality is when you get fireworks when lighting.

Why do you think it burns "like shite"? What do you use when you light your coals?

No, that was probably Cajun or B&B if I had to guess. That was a long time ago.

Yeah Cajun was the worst. I get sparks from B&B as well, but not as bad as Cajun or Cowboy.

That dude is unhinged

JD is fine. I used it for a couple months and found it no better or worse than KJ or Fogo

Wrong. Fogo is consistently excellent and much better than Jealous Devil. That is a fact despite the downvotes from what I believe are Jealous Devil representatives/employees.
