Cannatella Grocery, 3869 Government St, Baton Rouge, LA 70806 Nice selection of frozen entrees and sides.

Ended up going here and getting them a lasagna and the shrimp and eggplant casserole.

Also got a lasagna for my own freezer, along with spinach madeleine, a spinach and cheese stuffed chicken breast, their house made boudin, pimento cheese, olive salad/spread, and a whole hot pressed muffuletta.

I can't believe I've been sleeping on this place so long.

That looks delicious. Have your parents eaten the lasagna or the eggplant casserole yet?

Thinking of driving to the Melville place soon to pick up a few things.

I got the lasagna for myself and we ate it. It is delicious the first bite or two in, but incredibly rich. I wasn't able to eat much of it because of the richness, but your results may vary.

The meat in it was a pulled braised pork (maybe beef was in there too?) vs. your standard ground beef.

Interesting choice of meat filling.
I’m wondering about the eggplant. Sounds good.

Is the tomato sauce savory or sweet?

Its not Monjuni's sweet or anything, but definitely some sweetness to it. I want to buy some of their red sauce on its own without the rich meat to compare.

Well, don't make a trip to the Melville store if you're close to that area. They have very little of anything there like the BR store. It's in the middle of nowhere and it's a grocery and hardware store-more hardware than grocery. The people were delightfully nice, but they said when the BR store opened, they don't keep much of the homemade items in Melville anymore. Sad.

We managed to get some tomato gravy with meatballs, a muffalatta (very good), some Italian and smoked sausage to try, some of the olive salad and that's about it.

It was an interesting ride in an area we'd not been in. We passed the Paul Prudhomme Magic Seasonings, Andouille and Sausage factory in Palmetto. Nice building in the middle of nowhere. No cars there so difficult to determine whether it's still functioning.

There are lots of Palmetto growing in Palmetto.

Oh wow. That is surprising and disappointing.

It really is. The cashier said once they opened the BR store, "they forgot about us".

Maybe the locals didn't buy much of it. I remember the article on the BR store opening said they opened in BR because they had so many folks driving from BR and loading up on products.

I hadn’t realized initially that it was from Melville (or that ours wasn’t the first) so when I told my dad where the lasagna came from, he knew exactly where the Melville one was.

Said he used to deliver beer there when he was a beer delivery boy as a teenager.

Small world stuff. I'd never heard of Melville much less where it was until I read the article when the store opened in BR.
