That's just a fancy way of saying simmer it until the cornstarch mixture thickens the rest of the gravy up

Is their gumbo base any good? Never used it before but I have a bottle I think my mom gave me

Better than one would think. I could use it every time and never be disappointed.

I made the CN recipe on Saturday night. Boatload of onions, but also added a bit of celery and bell pepper. If was unusually sweet due to a ton of caramelized onions, but very good.
