Only have a few smokes under my belt so far by using the snake method. I find that I am constantly fooling with it to maintain a temp. Which method (minion, bank, snake, other) do you prefer and why?

It's a gateway drug to a WSM. Problem is space, but I still love my kettle.

The snake method works best for me on smaller jobs, but I haven't smoked anything over 6 hours on my kettle.

I have a 26" and I smoked some ribs and chicken the other day. Used a 2x2 snake and was able to hold 225 for about 5 hours.

Snake works like a charm on my 22" kettle. I've done butts up to 8 hours on it. Probably could have gone longer at a lower temperature by adjusting the kettle, but there was no need.

A little larger snake. My snakes aren't pretty.by any means, but they conceptually work like the snake should.

Same here. I've done ribs and butts on it. I start a small batch of coals in the chimney starter, and build the snake while that is burning. 2x2 and add big chunks of wood every few inches. I've also played around with using lump coal, or even the natural wood coal (not briquettes) but the easiest seems to be 2x2 of briquettes and adding wood for smoke. The reason for large chunks is that it smokes more and doesn't burn up as fast as chips or smaller pieces. It will hold temp for several hours.
