Food waste upsets me so I typically eat whatever leftovers are oldest out of principle (even if I have to eat it for a few days in a row).

In the off chance that something sticks around for awhile, visual/smell test is sufficient.

i have an issue throwing food. i'll eat the same leftovers until they are done instead of cooking a new meal with leftovers in the fridge.

I've recently gotten aggressive with freezing everything beyond just your standard soups/gumbo. I realized it when I buy my premade meals from Green Heart, and they instruct you to "use or freeze" by X date. If I can freeze those meals and not have an issue with reheating later, why not freeze my own food the same way?

This has helped with waste tremendously, since we are famous for getting a bunch of invites out right after we loaded the fridge with a big batch of something.. and then it goes to waste. Now I separate into multiple smaller containers and freeze on day 1.

I would definitely do this if we cooked larger portions. We're getting a freezer for the garage soon-ish and I'm looking forward to buying ingredients in bulk and being able to make larger meals with the intention of freezing some.
