Wasn't that place a front for some shadyness, mafia, gambling ring, politics???

The same reply that The Village in it's earliest incarnation would issue to such assertion, "There is no such animal..just friends playing a private game of cards."

Back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, there were quite a few places on that stretch of Airline, and Florida Blvd area right near Airline, that would be considered anywhere from large card rooms to full fledged casinos with slot machines and craps tables. Then again, as with any era, many of the patrons were your city leaders, be they Judges, Lawyers, Politicians, Doctors, Leading Businessmen, and even some Law Enforcement. And probably some money for a few blind eyes may have been involved. A common practice in much of SoLa during that era for the underground casinos.

anybody eat at the original Carlos' in Denham Springs. I remember going there with my uncle back in early 70's and hammering the taco pie...unreal. DS was dry but Carlos always had beer back in the kitchen and would serve it in opaque glasses so nobody would know you were drinking beer. That would have been Carlos Sr who was a really cool guy.

Put me in the old folks home too. Remember taking dates to LaFonda when I crossed the tracks (Airline) to take out those Broadmoor girls when the Sherwood Forest area was the hot new place in town to move to. And when I first started working, Bob and Jakes, Jake Staples and The Place were always good for dinners when the company was paying. We took our dates for our Senior Prom to the Ralph and Kacoos on Airline back when the Bluebonnet area was still woods.

LaFonda was one of the first, and for some dishes, still one of the better Mexican places in town, you just have to know what to order. Of course, after living in Texas for a few years, anything in Baton Rouge is going to disappoint.

I sure miss some of those places-good memories, and a few times, I even got lucky afterwards.
