Several threads about Isla Mujeres on the Travel Board that mention food but I wanted to see what the food board has to say about it. We're thinking about making a trip down there soon. Are the restaurants really legit or is just mainly over-hyped, touristy type food? What places would you all recommend?

We ate a place on the tip of the island and It might have had some of the best Ceviche ever.

I have visited Isla Mujeres at least a dozen times since 2011, yes the food is legit. Join Islaholics of Isla Mujeres on Facebook for great info on restaurants and the island in general. Enjoy!!

When we went I don't ever really remember having a sitdown dinner in a formal restaurant. We basically just walked down to the coast or to some dude on the dock, asked what the day's catch was, and had him fix us something.
It was incredible. Granted that was probably a decade ago, but it was some of the best food I've ever had.

It's fantastic and mostly inexpensive. Eat at Bastos for the best arrachera you've ever had.

All legit, all delicious but 1. It’s right next to the sea turtle farm.....called Shark Beach. It’s a huge buffet where the day trippers (from Cancun) are taken to eat lunch. There is this gimmicky Ice Bar there also where you put on this enormous fur coat and drink vodka in sub zero temperatures. Sounds fun but it’s disgusting and bland.

Food is great, didn't have a bad meal there. I said "this is the best ____ I've ever had" a few times. Pretty easy to tell which places are touristy from the atmosphere. I ate at Fuego de Mar at recommendation of someone who goes to Isla every few months and was probably the best meal we had. It's pretty new so probably not as well known, great meal.

Was not big but we sat down, kinda like a hut.

Cross post from the Travel Board.
Dopi's has the lobster burrito. It's great. Get Luis as your server if he's working.
The first time we went to Isla we rented the house next to the church across the street from Mango Cafe. I thought Mango Cafe was just ok but a lot of people love it.
Bars and restaurants to hit. Nash's on Hidalgo Street if you want to watch a game. The Joint down by Punta Sur for breakfast mojitos and all around good food. Veracruz for Cuban (not authentic but good food) and mojitos with Cuban rum. Soggy Peso on Thursday for a burger and the strongest margaritas on the island. Fredy's on Hidalgo for arrachera and of course Bastos for the best arrachera.
ETA: A lot of people swear by Ballyhoo for seafood but personally I've had better. However, if you fish they're happy to cook your catch for you.

If you want a hotdog you get it from the food cart. It costs like 25 pesos. They put jalapeños and cheese on them. fricking fantastic after a night drinking in Hidalgo Street.

We were last there about 10 years ago and seemed like everything was on Playa Norte except for a handful of things. It looks like the south part of the island has developed a lot.

It’s coming along. It doesn’t have the beaches like up north or on the east coast. There are some developments going up down there.
