I bought some strawberries last night to put in my daughter's lunch. This morning when I started slicing them I realized half of the ones I grabbed were soft and mushy. They were bright red and not the darker red. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I always look at the top and bottom for any funky looking ones. Sometimes its hit or miss. A really good place to get them is a farmers market.

When sealed in packaging, it's hard to tell what is hiding underneath what you can initially see. ANY trace of mold is a no-go, also look at the stem end and if that is a very pale green or yellow looking, chances are the berries are going to be a little bitter and were picked under ripe.

Other than buying when in season, it's a crap shoot as to how sweet they will be.

My tip is to always look at the bottom of the container. If you see any “wet” or slimy ones, put it back.

In addition to the posts above. We take the strawberries out of the package wash and let soak in water with a little salt and some vinegar. Rinse them off after a 30+ minute soak.

I find it really helps them keep in the fridge.

This is why I pick my own or buy enough locally to last the whole year

Problem I have with that is their quality suffers when frozen and then thawed.

They get too mushy for my liking, even though they will still taste good, and that limits what can be done with them since they tend to fall apart with even careful handling.

Same for frozen blueberries-----pretty much relegated to making jams, pancakes and muffins or blended in some fruit smoothie.

Strawberries will not continue to ripen once picked, so any white at the tops under the green portion of the stem will stay that way.
