How long do wines and champagnes keep? I heard somewhere that eventually the corks get dry rotted and the product goes bad. Dont know if that's true or not.

Literally depends on conditions.

That why it's stored on the side or downwards angle.

This wine typically sells in the $700-800 range. 1969 is considered to be an ok vintage for Champagne and some producers produced fine vintage wines. Old Champagne can be really good, but it is not for everyone. If you associate Champagne with light, bright flavors and lots of bubbles, this, assuming the bottle is actually in good condition, isn't going to be that. It will likely be close to flat, with considerable oxidation, and will taste more like a really old white Burgundy than what most people expect from Champagne. The odds that this bottle will be anything other than disappointing are low.
This was the answer I was looking for, the rest of you can frick off.
I did read that 1969 was a bad vintage for DP because of light rainfall.
I think I will offer them $100 for the bottle, just to say I have it.

Possible improper storage for a couple of decades? Yeah, you don't want to buy that.
Oh, I didn't buy it. When my uncle passed in 2002 he had it in his liquor cabinet. My Aunt didn't drink much so she gave it to me since 1980 is my birth year. I have stored it well since then, but I have no idea how it was stored prior... although my uncle was a smart man so probably stored fairly well. Just no way to know for certain... I don't even know when he acquired it.

Gotcha. That's a pretty cool thing to have laying around and the sentimental value is priceless.

Yeah, I have no idea when/if to open it. Still sealed in the box, and since I have no idea of the full storage life I don't want to open it and find out it's gone bad.

Save it for a special occassion. If it's turned you'll know right away. I love old wine. All the harshness is gone and you just get the aged fruit.

All that I know is that they typically blend years with champagne unless it’s a particularly good year. The fact that there’s a year on the label *may* be a good sign.
If a year is on the bottle, there is no blending of vintages. That would be illegal.
Regardless, Dom Perignon is always a vintage champagne, and it is only released when the vintage is up to standard. There is not a vintage every year, and they might not always be released in linear order. For instance, the last 3 vintages in order are 2006, 2009, and 2008 which is the current vintage.
As for OP, the estate probably knows it hasn't been stored properly or they can't guarantee it. Otherwise, they wouldn't be offering it to you.
