How dare you EVER walk into a restaurants restroom and use their water without paying..

You are such a leech on these buisness owners. Stealing from them.

There is an average of 1.6 GALLONS of water per flush for every patron using their restrooms. Thats a WHOLE LOT A DRINKING WATER.

I think the fountain soda drinks don't cost them more than a quarter. I remember reading somewhere that fast food restaurants in particular, make a HUGE profit on soda. Far more than on the actual food.

The mark up on sodas and tea(cost is in pennies) is huge and the biggest money maker...IMHO if they charge for water they are punishing you for not ordering one of their high mark up drinks....I would not eat at that restaurant.

ok what about a 10 buck lunch at chili's?

I wouldnt be pissed if I was charged for water and FWIW if I dont drink a beer or wine at a rest I always have water.
Customary to not get get charged, so thats people feel this way about it being free.

I see all this talk about not caring about the bill is all talk. It's only 25 cent brah, you're the one being cheap here

it was in reference to people saying that the cost of their glass of water should be absorbed by everyone else, somehow they are putting a glass of water on a pedestal. I really don't care that popular items cost more because they know that is where they can get a higher profit margin. I just find it funny that people want a certain menu item free because of some arbitrary social practice.

this marketing gimmick of offering me free water has wooed me too many times

Should the owner also take out of the pay of his employees if they wash their hands? Since this all needs to be accounted and paid for..

you build these costs into the price of the meal!

this is the entire dilemma. what costs to build in. of course bathrooms, silverware, a/c, etc are built into each meal. each glass of coke has built in prices for washing and glass rental . I guess the maybe there is a disagreement of where the cost should be built in. but that leaves out the people who would pay for the built in cost on their food and drink straight from the beer bottle.

so everyone has to pay for the people ordering water? why not factor in the price of cokes, or one beer per patron so that we all get free drinks?

I do get the perception that water is free, but this seems to be a sticking issue that people don't think they should be charged for goods provided.

Whether it's fair or not is not the issue. Obvioulsy water is not "free," but the practice of chargin for water is the issue.

It's a matter of where the restaurant draws the line. You don't see a cost for rent/mortgage, silverware, electricity on the bill as they figure out overhead costs into their pricing. The same is true for water.

You were charged for a CUP not the water in it. Ask them next time they will tell you exactly that.

In that case, do what Chris Rock did in "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka".

"F#$k the cup - just pour it in my hand for a dime."

from the previous 4 posts above I see that people are willing to pay for a paper cup they can take with them, but won't pay for labor, DESPITE HOW MINIMUM, to clean a glass.

First of all, if that's the angle you're going to take I'd say that that labor is paid for by the tip. Still, I think you are missing the point because you are looking at this the wrong way. It's not about paying for a good but not paying for a service, it's about paying a fair (competitive) price.

Charging for a cup of ice isn't that uncommon with fast food or convenience stores, charging for water IS uncommon in restaurants. Therefore charging for water is viewed as a very high price, even if it's only $.25 Now if a few restaurants started to do it and got away with it, no doubt you'd see competitors and consumer expectations change, but for now a competitive price for water is included with meal.

I think I am going to start adding $5 to every invoice I do for the cost of the ink and paper.

Legitimate charge don't you think ?

I agree with this. it isn't the fact that they charge for the water, it is that you see the charge on the bill. If they charge you by way of jacking up the food prices people would be more accepting.

+1, but how many would sacrifice the wash for the few extra pennies on their check.

I agree, people are willing to accept the fact that they are secretly charged, but get pissed if the cost shows up on the bill.

You wouldnt be pissed if a restuarant or movie theatre (WHERE YOU ARE A PAYING CUSTOMER) told you that you had to pay them because you took a piss because you used their water supply?

But of course they DID NOT tell your this until after you took a piss.

It's called business and it's about a turn key job...I don't want to know all the details.
