Homegrown Cantaloupes

I've never grown cantaloupes before but I planted one little pot of which has produced a nice little crop.
This is a 4 x 8 raised bed area mulched with that one plant.
The three that I picked this morning. I also got one yesterday. I haven't cut into them yet but they basically came right off the vine when I barely picked them up.
And it's sprouting more flowers so it will probably produce more as a Fall crop.
Blurry picture but one of the three from this morning.

I've grown them on a trellis before but when doing that, you have to support the melon when filling out. I did so with some of my wife's old, snagged hosiery. It expands when the fruit matures if you give it enough slack and tie it off to the trellis or it will break the fruit off the vine.
Melons just take up a lot of ground space in a garden that I'm now wanting to dedicate to just that one crop.

I've had volunteers come up from seed that I didn't plant so they are pretty easy to grow.

My compost pile is loaded with volunteers. Between Japanese Yard Longs, cucumbers, melons, tomatoes, peppers, etc. that I dump the clippings, seeds and bad product, it is like a large seed starting pile.

I had (for me) an excellent crop of cantaloupes this year. Probably 11 really sweet, good sized melons since the beginning of June, with only 2 plants.
In experimenting with them for 3 years, I've found not to let more than 3 grow on 1 plant at any given time or they begin to lose sweetness. Do not pick them until the vine releases on its own, or they won't be sweet enough. It will just fall off when they are ready, and you will be able to smell the sweetness when they are good. Get them off the ground when you identify melons you want to mature. I used Amazon boxes this year with good enough success, but anything to get them raised is fine.
ETA; They are incredibly heat resistant, as mine have been producing straight through this S. Texas blast furnace.
