Oats have a potential gravity of 1.037, so you definitely got sugars from the oats.

Rice hulls have no nutritional value or sugars that they bring to the table. Hence why they will never mold or go bad.

It must be the oats then. Though i would think beersmith would pick up on that. But i don't believe my gravity changed when i entered flaked oats into my recipe.

Do you crush your own grain? That's the only variable I can think of that might be different for my process each time. My mash technique and process stays the same for every batch. I get mine crushed at Brewstock and sometimes the seems crush better than others. I think a good grain mill might be my next investment.

I got the magazine at the house. I can take a picture of it and post it around lunch, if you want. Along with Abner, heady topper, and a few other great clones.

No, i order them crushed from Austin Homebrew.

OG = 1.088
FG = 1.030
IBU = 38
SRM = 55
ABV = 7.5%

13.5 lb 2row pale malt
1 lb dextrine malt
1.25 lb caramalt(37L)
0.5 lb crystal (90L)
1 lb chocolate malt (300L)
1.25 lb roasted barley (500L)

34 IBU Columbus @ 60 mins (.8oz of 14%AA)

Wyeast 1028 / WLP013 / Nottingham yeast

When crushing grains, keep the dark grains (Crystal 90, Chocolate, roasted barley) separate from the other grains.

Mash the pale malt, dextrine, and caramalt at 159F for 20 minutes.

Add the dark grains and hold temp for 5 minutes.

Begin mash out and lauter process..

Target pitch rate is 1 million cells/ml/degree plato or 2.5L starter...

Ferment @ 68F until final gravity is reached, condition 1 week at 52F, then keg

He won't even tell you what he does to his water...

I tried reading his AME on reddit and he dodges recipe/water questions better than David Vitter dodges questions about paying hookers for sex.

That really bugged me. Was a pointless AMA really. Especially compared to the people who go on the Brewing network and spill the beans.

Shaun is kind of an odd dude, and I can respect his whole 'it's a trade secret' stance with his recipes and water chemistry. Just don't do an AMA and then dodge questions the entire time.

I have a lot of respect for the brewers who go on BN and throw it all out there. You can get a ton of great info from those shows. I'd probably listen to the BN podcasts more often if they would separate out real information from all of the drunken bs.

So my uncle calls me yesterday and found all his homebrewing equipment from when he was in the Air Force and gave it all to me.



Had:
2 carboys(pictured)
3 hydrometers
2 bottle cappers
1 huge bags of assorted bottle caps
1 carboy/bottle cleaner

And a bunch of other stuff. The only thing I need to do is go to the local rubber/gasket shop and get some plugs for the carboys. Pretty awesome early bday gift

Nice homebrew haul there. Personally I prefer these carboy caps to the bungs.



Also I've never used glass carboys, but I'd assume they are heavy as all hell. you might want to pick up a carboy handle or a 'brew hauler'

Brew Hauler only.

I have both and haven't had any issues with either, but i've heard horror stories of the carboy handle either braking of the stress put on the neck causing it to break and drop a full 5 gallon carboy. That's some thick arse glass you don't want to be pulling out of your foot.

The handles actually say that they are decorative and not for picking up full carboys. Take that as you will.

Also I don't know about glass carboys, but the plastic better bottles fit perfectly in an old milk crate.

I switched to plastic but still have some glass ones hanging around. Will use those for my lambic experiments that will start after Dixie Cup.
