They gave me a lb of rice hulls yesterday due to the disasters of the last two brews when I let them be lazy in bagging the grain. A lb of rice hulls is an awful lot of rice hulls.

My next brew is an oatmeal stout, and i was thinking 1/2 lb. But with some of the things i've heard so far, i guess i'll go 1 lb. I'm at 12% flaked oats in my recipe (2 lbs)

My preferred method is to buy a gas manifold

Agreed.

I have and like the kind that morebeer sells.

You can add on to them later down the line when you want more than 2 kegs.
Make sure they have integrated check valves etc.

Well i'll probably be calling up B or LSUGrad to help me set it up for 2 kegs, once i modify the fridge and drill the holes.

I've built like 5 of them for myself or others, so there is plenty of available knowledge on the board if you need assistance. It is in the end fairly easy to do however.

If I use a pound in a mash with say 10% or 2lbs of flaked oats it should drain properly?

That is the idea. It typically works for me but since I have moved to the newish system I haven't really had to use them. Could have used them this past weekend however.

Oh, there will be questions asked. Prepare yourself...

I'm going to have to remove the bottom shelf of the fridge to fit the kegs, and i think i may extend up some supports to mount the manifold on, so i dont have to drill into the fridge anymore than i have to.

Another question, i was reading somewhere but i can't exactly remember the amount. But, what is the ideal hose length to run from your keg to the tap. I thought i remember seeing 5' somewhere, or maybe it was 15?

A lot closer to 5 than it is 15. I think I have 4-5' runs in my kegerator.

If money was no object I'd look into these though.

I have always shot for between 6 and 10 ft. I was always told that the longer the line the less co2 will come out of solution, however I have never found that to be true so idk.

I'll stick with the standard lines, and just twist tie the draft lines.

Sweet! Looks like i will be the owner of a keg kit.

Congrats! Your IPAs will thank you.

Completely agree on the gas manifold as the way to go... unless money is no object OR someone else is buying. If that's the case then go with a secondary regulator bank.

Going that route.

I'm planning on brewing after we get back from Disney, so in 2 weeks. Maybe the system will be up and running by then.

Set a craigslist alert for CO2 tank... You'll eventually want a spare bc that 5lb will go empty on you when you need it most.

Also keep an eye on Adventures in Homebrewing for their loose top keg sales. It's by far the cheapest way to pick up kegs.

Yep. That's what I have set up and I still haven't picked up a second tank even though I desperately need to.

I got LOTS of hits on Paintball equipment, but very few actual CO2 tanks.

I got lucky and ended up trading someone a 5lb for a 20lb and picked up a spare 15lb tank from one of our members when they moved out of the country.

For those of you with pumps...

Brewing pumps specifically, what type of connections do you use. Is it mandatory to use quick disconnects or are tight fitting barbed connections ok?

I use triclamp. If I could go back I would probably switch to cam locks. Tri-clamps work great and are more sanitary than what I was using before, but it would be nice to be able to put hoses on/off with one hand.

I wouldn't say QDs are manditory. I used barbed fittings for years.
