In my younger days, I had a MrBeer kit. I feel like it was a crap system and I know my beer out of it was half assed at best. It was fun though. I'd like to get back into it but I want better equipment to work with. Do any of you home Brewers have any recommendations on equipment? Buy a kit or piece it together?

Are you in BR? I can pretty much sell you an entire setup for very cheap minus a chest freezer for fermentation.

No, I'm not. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the next time I'll be through BR either.

Gotcha well if you want me to shoot you an email, I can guide you in the right direction. The guys in the homebrew thread can also help you a lot with what you may or may not need.

You out Curds?

OP- if you are tight for space, look for a BIAB setup. You can basically do everything in one kettle and they are typically electrical so you can control temperature very easily. I have a grainfather but there are many new ones hitting the market.

Not out, still trying to sell my ssbrewtech equipment after upgrading to unitanks. I have exclusively done BIAB since I started and advocate for it as a first all grain setup.

What kind of unitanks do you have? What size? That’s a couple years away but I could see me morphing into that. I use kegs to ferment in and close transfer. It’s like a mini unitank I guess. I’m cleaning up after a brew right now. It’s the worse part.

Not to thread steal, but has anyone used a Grainfather? Seriously considering one.

It’s the only thing I’ve ever used. The Bluetooth controller is nice and you can put the recipe in it and it gives you reminders. Having said that, I’m not sure it’s worth the extra money. I think there is a similar brand without the controller and it’s like $400 cheaper. It was good when I first started but I don’t really need the controller now. I know some other companies are coming out with similar set ups. I think SS was coming out with one.

Spike CF5. They are 7 gallon so safe brewing up to 6 gallons. If you have a closed transfer with your current setup then I wouldn't bother upgrading. Only feature missing would be the dump valve and maybe thermowell? I haven't really gotten into yeast harvesting yet but I will be doing so in the not so distant future.

I'm fully admitting that I don't know what I'm doing.

Does this system look ok?

The only limit with fermenting in the kegs is volume. I’ve got to keep it around 4 gallons. Sometimes I split batch and put them in two different kegs and treat them differently. I’ve got a chest freezer I use for temp control. If I go to a unitank I need to get a chiller. Probably not worth it.

That system is very close to the grainfather but without the controller. If you have a 220v hook up at the house, I’d go with the 220V. Grainfather only has 110v in the US and it takes a little while to heat up if it’s cold outside. I don’t have a jacket either.

That looks like everything you may need. I’m sure you will upgrade as you figure it out but that’s a good start. I don’t bottle anything. That’s a pain in the arse. I went right to kegs.

2 - 7 gallon ssbrewtech brewbuckets modded with thermowells and the ability to closed transfer

Bayou classic KAB6 burner

15 gallon ssbrewtech kettle

3 piece ball valve

All other fittings needed

Inkbird temp controller

Eta: Probably some other stuff I am leaving out

I got a standup freezer for my unitanks. I could not justify the cost of glycol chillers. the heating pad that Spike sells is not a necessity but does work well and the two combined keep my temp within 1 degree during ferm/cold crash.

What BIAB system are you using? I probably would’ve gone with another brand besides grainfather. There are just some quirks.

I have a burner cart setup with a Spike kettle and pulley system. Didn't feel like installing a 220 in my garage.

Damn... I'd probably take those off of your hands if I lived closer. Shipping costs to ATL would probably negate any price break gained from buying secondhand.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, how much are you looking to get for them?
