re: ham and cheese - ask to be cold or ask to be hot?
Hardee's has these...haven't had one in years but they used to be pretty good.

When making a ham and swiss po boy at home, do you make it with grilled ham and melted cheese? Just curious.

If I'm making a ham and cheese at home and I have the time to do it right, I brown the ham in a skillet to knock the chill out the meat and melt the cheese with it. I'll also toast my bread, use good pickles and mustard, put some onions and tomato on it. Or I may even put a fried egg on top.

Now, if I'm bringing something to eat for lunch at the office, I just put some cold ham and a slice or two of cheese between bread.

I was vaguely remembering it to be Hardee’s so I bet you’re right

Unfortunately we don’t have one

I like ham and cheese hot or cold. If you want to go to the effort of serving it to me hot, I'm fine with that.

yes but that is not the point

if you are soaked in sweat working in 90 degree heat you are looking to cool off and eating a cold sandwich is what most outdoor workers prefer.

when i was in high school and for a while after, i worked in po-boy shops and all the po-boy shops have ham and cheese on toasted bread with the ham and cheese served cold, and then they have the grilled ham and cheese which is grilled ham with melted cheese.

somewhere along the line they stopped serving cold ham and cheese and it became a special request to get one

This seems like a situation you're all too familiar with.

You should have asked.

I'm definitely going to inquire on my next ham and cheese

I dunno. Personally what cools me off is a nice cold drink. Not a little old sandwich. I mean, I wouldn't want to eat a bowl of gumbo or pho after working in the yard, but the temperature difference between a cold meat sandwich and one where you heat it enough to melt cheese is minor.
