My neighbor is moving to Hawaii this weekend and he gave me his grill for free.

It's a Char-Grill heavy arse dual mode rig with gas on one side and an offset smoker on the other. It works just fine, but the smoker box has a fair amount of rust on it.

Does anyone have any tips to either treat the rust or at least prevent it from getting worse?

I have a Masterbuilt Gravity Smoker already so it's not the end of the world if I can't salvage this one, but it is pretty damn cool and would be a great addition to my outdoor grilling space.

I had an offset for years. My son has it now. Once a year, I painted it with black high temp engine paint. If the rust was bad, I scrubbed it with a steel brush first, then painted.

I miss my offset a lot. It was a cooking machine.

MD is spot on. Use wire brush to knock off any rust and go with a high temp paint designed for BBQ pits and engine manifolds. 2000* degree temp rating is best ... sold at Lowe’s, HD, O’Reilly, AutoZone, NAPA

Wire brush the rust first, then coat the rusted area with phosphoric acid. This will convert the rust to a blackish primer. Once dry paint with high temp engine/header paint. Will last for quite a few years. Also, always clean out fire box the day after you have used the smoker, then store the unit covered and in the shade.
