CP's smaller portions

I didn't find their portions to be small at all

I actually thought it was a decent value for higher end dining which is rare.

I understand that gumbo without rice is strange I'm just saying that it was very enjoyable whether or not you would consider it authentic gumbo

There's nothing strange about it.

Rice is much less tasty than the gumbo itself - so you might as well fill up the entire bowl with it.

I LOVE rice and gravy. I could eat it every day. I usually put it in gumbo, but I always order it on the side because so many places put so much that the gumbo becomes more like rice and gravy than gumbo with rice. When I order a cup of gumbo, I rarely add the rice. If I do, I don't add much. Those little cups of gumbo at Commander's are small. I'd rather have the gumbo than half rice and half gumbo or whatever.

I see lots of other folks load their bowls with rice when they eat gumbo, though. It's just about personal preferences.

Thats a big negatory R2R. My heartburn is/was their advertising something that isnt even close to gumbo. If I order stuffed eggplant with shrimp, then thats what it should be. Their gumbo is their tortue' soup, without the tortue'.

And I agree, quality over quantity in all cases, except for $100 bills.

I see. Guess I got that impression from you complaining about how little meat they put in their gumbo.

Yes I agree. I was referring to smaller portions in relation to what a particular person is used to.

Whatever you do... Get the Bread Pudding Souffle.

There is no better dessert.

As you mentioned, the garlic bread is devine.

I like all the entrees, but the Strimp & Tasso Henican for an app is great and the Commander's salad is a good as a dinner salad.

Where I grew up, gumbo without rice is like red beans without rice, pecan pie without pecans etc, etc.

And where I come from, not liking Commander's is like not liking food at all.

I've never eaten at Commander's. I might get my parents to spring for it when I graduate

Although Commander's is my favorite restaurant, the souffle is not my favorite dessert. I found it to be underwhelming, although others rave about it. Maybe I need to give it another try?

When it is done to perfection it is a blissful experience. Unfortunately I have had a couple that were not done to perfection and therefore, underwhelming. Not bad, just not what one would expect of it if they had heard how wonderful it is. They do have excellent desserts overall (one of my faves was a bananas foster sorbet, yes, sorbet, on the Ochsner heart healthy menu once).

Cappuccino after 10 am? Cretin.

Sounds like you had a great meal. Those folks know how to run a restaurant.

Their lunch is one of the best secrets in the city.

No lie, the prices for lunch entrees are similar to Houston's or J. Alexander's (or even Copeland's) prices (around $15-18 an entree) then you get twenty five cent martinis. Then the dress code is relaxed at lunch.

You really can't beat the lunch special, even if you get the three course (or four) with everything its $29.

Then you get the best service ever, they will earn a 25%+ tip, its that good.

This is why I like going to nice places for lunch. It's good to avoid the stuffy atmosphere sometimes.

Yeah no doubt. My friend I was eating with is one of the managers there. He showed me around a little bit. Having worked in several restaurants, I'll say that place runs with almost flawless efficiency. I'm amazed that they're able to churn out food of that quality and volume as quickly as they do.
