Beer. Or some other alcohol. I don’t think you need a side. It’s boiled seafood. Corn, shrooms or maybe some hotdogs thrown in the pot before you cook the crabs. Nothing else needed.

Except good beer.

I think I’d focus on the desert. People will be full of beer and salt from the seafood. A good desert is a must.

Potatoes and cauliflower too. Cauliflower may be my favorite thing in a boil now. Throw the head in whole.

as far as boiled in crab boil - corn on cob, whole mushrooms, smoked sausage, whole garlic cloves, whole or half green onions, hot dogs, carrots, boiled eggs, small (new) potatoes, are what comes to mind of hand.

How long do you boil new potatoes? I might try that next time I boil seafood.

i put them in when the seasoned water is still cold and i just turned on the burner, so by the time it gets to a rolling boil, they should be close to ready so i take them out, cut one to see if its soft all the way through and if they they are still firm in the middle they need more cooking and i put them back in on top of the crabs after it returns to a rolling boil. when the center of the potatoes soften, they are done and seasoning depends how long they are allowed to soak.

its best to use a boiling bag for extras so you can put them in or out as needed without trying to dig through the pot for everything. i have even used an old tee shirt as a extras bag when my bag got torn open and it works ok in a pinch.

it all depends on the size and if they dont have new potatoes i cut medium sized potatoes into quarters so they get better seasoned and cook faster. i like to keep them around golf ball thickness if i can.

it takes something like 15 minutes to cook them but the amount of burner heat and pot size matters for the time it takes
