Hmmmmm. I've been doing this for years without a hitch.

Yeah. I also put diesel in my car whenever it's cheaper. The things people worry about are kinda silly.

Here is something apropos that just randomly came across my Reader:

you are talking about two completely different thing with the tea brewing and coffee brewing. the tea brewing story talks about the procedure and order of steps. the coffee brewing is two different ways of preparing the coffee. Of course, I think that most of the thing people taste in a French Press is the freshly ground coffee instead of older store bought grinds.

I'm with you.

Steak-Waffle House Sirloin is as good as anything.
Long John Silvers and Captain D's have good seafood
And an Online Will works just fine.

Well, I think Hitchens would argue that changing the order of steps amounts to a different way of brewing it. But in any event, your last statement is probably correct...IF people can tell any difference in the first place. And I'm not at all convinced that they can.

Had a co-worker a few weeks ago say the he was going to Applebees after work to get a good steak. Instead of being a pretentious dick I just let it go. After the guy walked out someone said "did that frick stick say Applebee's has a good steak?"

It's all relative though I suppose.

FOR THE MONEY (note the emphasis), I'd rather have the Steak and Eggs with hashbrowns and a waffle on the side at Waffle House for $10 than a filet at Chops for $50.

Can't be any worse than their burger with the peppercorn junk in it!

People can tell the difference in coffee that I am convinced of. However, it does work both ways, some don't want to admit there is a difference.

Where I work we have at least 4 pots a day. Only thing they drink is Community. I slipped some 8 o'clock in there because that I what I make when I'm on. Without any prompting they talked about how the coffee tasted better than normal. It didn't surprise me that they noticed a different flavor, but that they picked it off and said it was better is what got me.

Of course if they see me making a pot of 8 o'clock or Dunkin it is going to be the worst pot they ever had. So usually I just don't admit to making it and say someone else must have put it together.

I am convinced as well.
I've done coffee taste tests and I can tell regular from decaf and different brands etc.

And believe me, I am no culinary giant.

Basically, it's a stronger, more concentrated cup of coffee, that's all. Not like an espresso/cappucinno, but still different for sure.

The example from this thread was the exact same batch of beans, but one dripped and one pressed.

I get this, that is why usually I won't bash someone on what they like. I did have a slight slip of the tongue when he said that some other place on Bluebonnet had good steaks and I said, "Yeah Primo's is good." He was referring to Texas Roadhouse.

Fair enough. My response was going down one of the detours in the thread and not directed at that particular issue.

Agree with this.

Would I prefer meal at Morton's over one at Chili's? Of course.

But am I going to get some decent chips and salsa (app), a decent burger (entree) and a good margarita (cocktail) for $17.50 at Morton's? Probably $75.00.

All I'm saying is this: if we take the exact same batch of beans and use drip to make one cup and french press to make another and then we pour out 10 random cups for someone to test blind, they will not be able to label them correctly. In other words, there is no "big difference".

All I am saying is you are wrong.

Things controlled different by French press coffee. 1.) water temp 2.) time

The two things that make huge difference in taste.

I get the water just before its boiling point (using boiling water is a big no-no) - where you can see tiny bubbles sitting still. And I generally let it brew just under 5 minutes.

Am I doing something wrong? Just curious...

Two things are being overlooked in the thread: 1) many drip coffee makers do not heat water hot enough to make good coffee nor does the water contact the coffee for very long during the process; 2) Not only does one pour boiling water into the french press, the amount of time the grounds stay in contact (steeping, whatever one wants to call it), is typically much longer than water running thru the drip process. Like when I make it the water/coffee steeps for 8-10 minutes in the FP. I like FP much better than drip using the same beans, but YMMV.
