serious question here

when you cook apples they get soft and sweet so what if they were sliced thin and deep fried like french fries?

would they be like little fried apple pie sticks or would they end up more like regular french fries that taste like apples?

me and a friend were talking about it and it sounded like something good but we didnt have any apples to try it to see if they would turn all gooey and sweet inside or stay firm and just taste like regular apples

There are quite a few recipes on the internet for apple fries.

i have seen quite a few for "fried apples" but those are pan fried or saute'd apples, not sliced apples fried in grease like french fries.

i only found one with apple wedges in a batter dip then covered in cinnamon sugar and i might try that but thats not exactly what i had in mind when we were talking about french fries made from apples

So you're thinking about slicing apples and dropping into a fryer?

Not going to work. Apples have a much higher water content and don't have the starch to withstand the intense heat. You'll get goopy, gross, greasy apples.

You could batter them. That'd be good. But I wouldn't try deep frying apple slices.

yep, thats exactly what we were thinking of trying to do

i guess its one of those ideas that sound better in your head then they actually work out in reality

thanks for the heads up to avoid the disaster

so i guess the batter shell is the only way it can work. that one recipe i found sounded good so we might try that one out. if anyone was interested to try it, this is the one i found: LINK

They can be deep fried, but need a coating or a batter.

Here's one of the recipes that came up when I googled. It only uses a cornstarch coating and indicates as they cool they will not stay firm.

i had the silly idea you could just cut into french fries, throw them into grease, and they would come out like skinny little apple pies

the corn starch one looks easier then making a batter, i wonder if fish fry would do the same thing as the corn starch?

i wasnt expecting crunchy but i had hoped they would stay semi-firm

I don't know. I'd read through some of the recipes and see if any of them give some of those tips.

It may be that the fish fry wouldn't stick well without a dunking in flour, egg wash and then the fish fry. The apples would need to be very dry, I would think, also.

I've seen apple chips at the grocery. So I guess you can.
