On the drive in I saw nothing but chains. Other than the obvious of St. Elmo (going tonight), are there any recommendations for places to eat in the downtown area that aren't places I can find across the damn country? TIA.

Go to Mass Ave. Walkable from downtown. The Eagle has great fried chicken, Bakersfield has really good tacos etc. Black Market and Union 50 are modern american gastropub places with great food and cocktails. Bru Burger for burgers. For drinks ball and biscuit and libertine for cocktails. In the city market tomlinson tap room has really good selection of indianan beers.

I'm going to second The Eagle. Some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. I go to Indy a bunch for work and it's a must each trip.

Bakersfield is pretty good. On Mass Ave also is Bazbeaux's Pizza, and Bru Burger. If you have a car I would suggest driving to Kuma's Korner. Don't be scared off by the death metal ambiance, the burgers are awesome.its over in the Fountain Square area.

Rathskeller is another solid place if you want to try out a German Beer hall. Pretty decent food too
