don't ever use salt. just keep rinsing them until they are clean. salt will kill too many of the crawfish at the bottom. it instantly cramps their gills. that's why they are not a saltwater fish.

We peel that little vein off because it gross...right after sucking the brains out of the crawfish head.

"purging" is not a myth. its happened right before my eyes hundreds of times.
Purging, meaning causing them to throw up or shite, is 100% myth, as is thinking that salt in the water will speed up the process of doing something that is a myth in the first place.

You must use way more salt than I do. I let them sit in low salinity water for an hour, then rinse repeat. What does it matter if a couple of them die any way...cording to the AG experts they are still fine.

Hubby is a rice/crawfish farmer ... while eating crawfish the other day with friends, they were talking about this.
He only rinses them off ... gets dirt, grass, trash out (little minnows, etc that get put in the sack by accident) ... then he rinses until the water is all clear. The vein, they were talking about has to do with what bait is used (real or artificle) and the age of the crawfish.
We just pull the poo poo vein out ... good to go.
Gee, thanks ... now I'm hungry for crawfish and he can't boil them tonight as they're planting rice.

Purging isn't a myth but you're not going to do it in your back yard either
Posted on 3/30/12 at 4:04 pm to Choctaw
Try just washing them and soaking them in water for 5-10 minutes until the water running out of the ice chest is clear. Then "purge" them with salt and see if any significant amount of stuff comes out and is in the water.
You're cloaked in fail, son.

People who don't eat the poo vein eat crawfish at a much slower rate. Better hope there is more than enough to go around.

Fact! Purging generally takes place in large tubs with a steady flow of water for 24-48 hours.

Nah, I get them from a few places but not there

Nope fin not at all... typical first plant date is march 15 (normally 1st no frost date) but he started a little earlier this year.
April 15 is considered the latest for a first crop if you're going to be planning on a 2nd crop. And now he's trying to beat this weather ... between the last 2 rain events, he worked planting until 3 am and then 12 am the next day. Enough to make a wife worry!

We planted early this year with the warm winter

I purge them with clean water usually 3 times (fill tub, drain, fill tub, drain, fill tub, drain) and that does the trick. No salt needed. I tried it with salt and without and found no difference. Always tasted great!

Too many pansies in this thread who take the vein out. Just eat the damn thing.
