i'm relatively new to the coffee world, been a regular drinker for a year or so now. i love it, the taste, the smell, everything, but i'm ready to expand from the folgers and maxwell house world
what are some good styles and brands? i've heard ethiopian coffee is good, so i bought a cheap thing of it from wal-mart and it seems like i'm gonna have to acquire a taste for it

I just started in November and am now a full fledged 1 pot a day junkie.

definitely invest in a quality coffee maker. i have this one:
LINK
takes whole beans or ground. my go-to home brew is Community Dark Roast - whole beans. (my Cuisinart grinds them fresh for every pot)
also i recommend using bottled water rather than tap and don't drink coffee that has been sitting for more than half an hour.
i'm a fan of Community and Mello Joy. also like to try Columbian beans when I can get my hands on them. anytime you see a mom and pop coffee house when you're out and about or traveling stop and pick up a bag of their brand.

Your next step, if you haven't done so already, is to buy a coffee grinder. If you grind fresh beans right before you brew them, it makes for a better coffee.
The freshest way that I know of to get good beans is go to whole foods. They roast their coffee in the store. They def. have some good rich flavored stuff. Summatra is one of my favorites.
Because of the strong flavor, I like most of Starbucks coffee. It helps that I have a family member who works for the corporate offices in Seattle, so she sends me free coffee to try.
Later on, you should buy a french press and try brewing coffee that way. It is so easy and seems to make the coffee taste better.

It's not cheap here in the US but blue mountain coffee from Jamaica is the best I've ever had. There are a few different brands that make it (Jablum being my favorite) but the altitude at which it's grown in the tropical climate make it special.

I have been a Community Dark Roast guy for years, but, there is another local Coffee that stands the test. River Roads is a small shop Coffee roasted in BR and very good. Give it a try........
Treedawg turned me on to this, and been drinking it ever since....I load up when I come over to La, and bring back for friends here in Tex.

Coffee is definitely one of those things like beer and olive oil that everyone has a favorite. This means you are going to have to find out what works for you. I love coffee and have tried many of them and my favorite is Hawaiian Kona coffee. To find out what you like the best you might want to go to a local coffee shop. If you live in Baton Rouge Highland coffee by LSU is great. Some things to start with is if you want a lot of flavor try darker roasts Roberto beans but if you are looking for just high caffeine content try a light roast. Also if you are looking to brew at your house whole beans are the way to go they will remain fresh longer and by grinding them before each use you will extract the full flavor of the bean. Also store your whole beans in a air tight container at room temperature. I hope that helps you

My plan is buying freshly roasted beans from Whole Foods or Highland Coffee in 8oz bags until I find a roast that I really like, or maybe I will just continue to vary it up. I really like having a new coffee every week or so. Its not terribly expensive but it is more expensive than buying Community or River Roads.

If you are going the K cup route, might I suggest 2. Emmerils Dark Roast and/or Paul Newmans Dark Roast. Either is mint!
