Charcoals losing heat quickly?

I've been having issues with my charcoals losing heat too quickly. Any thoughts on ways to prolong the charcoals? Anything I could be doing wrong?
These are what I use:
I use a cylinder with newspaper in the bottom to heat them up.
Thoughts?

I used to use the mesquite coals several years ago and had the same issue. I only use regular Kingsford now and have no problems whatsoever.

I'd recommend using another wood as your primary, and just use the mesquite to help add a little sweetness. Maybe a 4 to 1 ratio. I use hickory primarily.
You could also switch to using chunk wood instead of charcoal briquettes.

I use the same thing and they work for me just fine. Are you're bottom vents open? Is your air flow good?
You might try putting a little oil on your newspaper to make it burn a little longer. It get's the coals going better in my experience. One you pour them out, add some unlit charcoal on top.

Yea, my bottom vents are open. I did not think about that. You think it is that?
I will close them next time and see if it helps.

Don't close them, just crack them a little

Yeah, what he said.
I was having the same problem fyi, and then I went and brought a new grill. I only spent 40 on a kettle style charcoal grill, but it works great.

Don't shut them off but go half way. Your burning too fast with too much air.

Why did you need to get a new grill?
Posted on 5/12/12 at 8:20 pm to urinetrouble
The one I had was just an old piece of shite with bad air flow.

Just have a talk with your doctor.

Don't leave them in that charcoal chimney too long. If the briquettes on top of the chimney turn white, the ones on the bottom are almost burned up.
Dump the chimney in the pit when the edges of the top coals turn white.

I use the same thing. No problems. I keep the bottom vent wide open but keep the top vent almost completely closed. I've got a barrel type with a smoke stack.

I use lump sometimes. Really hot. Makes a crackling sound while burning. I'm doing k-bobs today. Marinated chicken chunks all night.

The stuff burns like crazy (I haven't bought a bag of charcoal except out of necessity when lump was not in sight in years), for his smoke flavor, chips of whatever wood he desires to flavor the meat with is all it needs. As the summer heat begins to bear down I will cook most of my meals on the grill just to not heat up the kitchen.

Ah, that might be part of the problem as well. How do you gauge when it is time to take them out of the chimney?
