Santa came early and dropped off a 4 gallon cast iron pot for Christmas.

My problem is there is about a 1”L x 1/4” W x 1/16” deep hole in the bottom of the pot (inside of the pot). Should I be worried by this and swap it out, or will this ever cause an issue? I understand it is cast and won’t ever be perfect but this kinda stuck out like a sore thumb.

Thoughts from the F&Ders

Merry Christmas!

I'd get another one only because of the pain in the arse of worrying about it burning a roux or trapping burnt crap in there.

Structurally it is probably fine.

I think (under heat stress) that would likely crack.

I would take it back. You want your pot to last years and years and there is a chance that one won't.

Making a roux in that pot would drive me nuts. Take it back.

Every time I would drag my spoon across that dip I would have to take a sip of my drink to kill the frustration.

Whatcha doing with that pot again?

I know people who have bought "irregular" pots and ground the defects out.

yeah that dip is gonna trap stuff. not to mention those dimples will hang up on a wooden spoon. that is a poorly made pot.

The pot isn’t much more than 1/4” thick. If I try to grind it out it would probably be close to 1/8” in That area.

I’m just going to bring it back to swap out. It would definitely drive me crazy trying to cook over it.

Return it for another. I had one a few years ago that split from the middle all the way up the side the first time I put it on the heat. That looks like a split waiting to happen.
