Got a 5 gallon pot, if I have it 90% filled, how many standard size bowls could that produce? Also how much rice would be necessary?

Thinking about making one to use the money generated to donate to a family in need that just lost their house in a fire, suggested donations amounts are also welcome in this thread

ETA: I remember StadiumRat had a gumbo calculator at one point (or maybe that was discussed but never implemented).

It was discussed, but there are too many factors to calculate.

128 ounces in a gallon

Figure your pot will have 500 ounces of gumbo

A serving size is 10-12 ounces

50 small servings or 40 larger servings

Rice:

1 cup raw = 3 cups cooked

Figure 1/2 cup per serving (I think that’s too much, but be safe…)

You need 25 cups of cooked rice so that’s 9 cups of raw rice

1 pound of raw rice is 2.3 cups, so you need 4 pounds of rice

As far as money, you’re not going to make much with 5 gallons. $8 or $10 for a plate of food is standard but that’s with sides.

I’d charge $10 for 16 ounces of gumbo for a fundraiser.

If I’m serving a bowl with 10-12 ounces, I’d charge $8 max for a fundraiser and that’s high with no sides.

It all depends on who you’re selling to. If it’s people you know, they will gladly pay higher to help. If it’s strangers, not so much.

You can go to a restaurant supply store and buy 10 or 12 ounce ladles. Perfect for portioning.

Our church used to do some heat and eat fundraisers. Rather than eating on the spot, you could buy casseroles ready to cook or pints or quarts of gumbo, chili and the like. Some frozen, some not. It was great. The food was surprisingly good.

I mean if you are willling to eat all the costs I would think $5-8 a bowl is fine.

$5 is fair, but you’re making $200-$250. That’s not much for a family whose house just burned down.
