I do briquettes for smoking with lots of sticks. I use lump for grilling. Briquettes leave more coal and ash which is better for smoking but not grilling. I use both though

I use just lump…. Rockwood, Jealous Devil and Fogo if I can’t find the other 2.
All 3 can be found at Goodwood.
Home Depot will carry Jealous Devil.
I have also used a bag of Blue Oak as well. I’m not sure who makes theirs as I assume they just put their label on something.

Lump for smoking. And I only use it to get my logs lit at the beginning. After that, I have a nice bed of coals that I can add more logs onto as needed.
This.
Always keep a bag of B&B, and they're usually used to start the fire and keep a bed of hot coals to throw post oak or pecan on top of. The only exception is if I'm wanting to quickly sear some steaks or burgers in a rush, not wanting to wait for the wood logs to get to temp.

Lump for everything and then I'll soak pieces of hickory in water and add those for more smoke.
