Anyone know? Tried Michaels on Jefferson and they had some big ones but some tiny ones as well. They don’t sort.

Basically I’m looking for select. TIA

Why does it matter if the crawfish are farmed vs wild? Genuinely curious.

Also, select will probably run you close to $200 for a sack right now.

Because they taste better.

What’s the cost/benefit of having 1/3 of the sack inedible because they are tiny bugs?

Be willing to drive to get them…. Call a wholesaler where the crawfish come from. Most of the pond crawfish come from Acadiana. They’re are several places you can buy in lafayette. Call crawfish time on Moss. They’re from Acadia parish.

They’ll have what you’re looking for or at least the biggest you can probably find right now. That being said…. You aren’t going to get the biggest and best from anyone. Those go to their restaurants and the other local restaurants. If you’re willing to pay, you can get get graded and the biggest they have available to sell to the public.

Just seeing if anyone brings select to the GNO area. I know there is a place in Port Allen that has their own pond

Got a sack from Schaeffer's in Bucktown yesterday and they were mostly good sized crawfish, not that they didn't have some smaller ones, but the vast majority were what I was hoping for.

They offer 2 types, Bell River and pond raised and I opted for the pond raised and was very satisfied. Pond were $3.25 a lb. paying cash, $3.50 using plastic. Bell River were $.50 a lb. over that price per option.

Five of us, with 4 being females only had about 2 lbs. left when we finished. That first sack of the year usually gets destroyed and I was happy to not have a bunch to peel today to put in the freezer. That will come later this season when I get 2 sacks, one to eat, one to peel.

a sack of quality medium/large grade crawfish will have more crawfish and yield more tail meat than a sack of big monster crawfish. IMO, you don't want big-azz crawfish since you're paying by the weight. I boiled 200 lbs. this weekend (Med/Lg) and paid $2.65 lb., purchased in Lafayette and they were very clean.

Maybe a dumb question, but what is this? Wild caught?

Not a dumb question. Yes, wild caught known for harvesting in the latter part of the season most years. They are usually offered after the pond crawfish have petered out. The thing with them at that time of year is the shells are usually much redder, rougher texture and hard as hell making peeling them a bit of a PITA, especially for us who don't mind sucking the juice and fat out the heads.

I know Jaegers gets select delivered to them. I'm sure it would be as easy as speaking with the GM to find out where they get them and if they'd be willing to sell you a live sack.
