other info i've found:
apparently the BK 450sq" is both grills (an 18" main and 16" top) (color me disappointed)...
also, comment on this con: "pop rivets to hold together the body and internal brackets are weak and problematic"

only negative stuff i've found:
quote:
Loaded with features from a pair of bottle openers to the numbered vents for easy control this grill is very well thought out and with a few exceptions well designed. The problems actually seem slight, but put together are troubling. First of all the top vent will let any water that falls on it leak into the grill. Rain or sprinkler water will find its way in. The cast iron coal grate and cooking grate in contact with the enameled fire bowl and body scratch off the protective coatings exposing the steel to a rusting potential (mine has four rust spots after a month). This greatly limits the durability of this grill, especially when compared to ceramic versions.

not sure. it took me abouut 30 minutes to assemble..the bolts screwed in under the mounts that support the shelves and you dont ever see them again.
its very solid...slides on and off the wheelbase easily. not sure what they're referring to.
fwiw..i smoked a SMALL (10 lbs or so) brisket and about the same size butt on it at the same time; the brisket was on one side and the butt on the other and the 'tool' would go down in the middle and lift the whole cooking grate out.
i had to do this as i let the fire go out once while cooking.
so consider that..you dont want to 'unbalance' the grate since the tool inserst in the middle if you need to lift the grate out for any reason.
course i'm the one who shut the vents down so much i starved the air.
it kept a rock solid temp for a good 8-10 hours i can tell you that..and from only a small handful of lump charcoal (well, 2 hands full)

i mentinoed the water thing on the previous page..you can solve that with a $10 smoker cover (at home depot)

i havent noticed that..i've got a good bit of grease built up on mine from smoking so maybe that's acting as a bit of insulation? i'll look when i get home..this seems minor to me..how much banging around are you doing with your grate to cause this?? I'm pretty careful when raising & lowering my grate and haven't noticed this.
again..play around with the one inside home depot..they have one assembeled ... try to scratch the insides w/ the grate and see what you think

what does the BGE do to allow for "l&s indirect cooking"?
same thing...BK and the BGE both rely on air flow for temperatures. there is an opening on the top and the bottom and you just tweak with those to control the flame/temp.

considering that i'm 100% gas currently, i'm going to use the weber kettle we use for tailgating for a while to see if i like the idea of charcoal then in the spring i'm going to make the BK/BGE descision (leaning hard toward BK at this point from everything i've read so far)

If you just want a smoker, the Weber Smoky Mountain is as good as it gets and you can get one for under $300. If you want it for more than that, you will need to consider one of either the BGE or the BK.

This thing seems to beat them all.
Grill Dome
Nothing to rust on it. All stainless hardware.
Here's a link with good videos comparing the 2.

it's twice the price of a WSM

i tell ya what (hank hill voice) that bubba keg will just slide right onto your tailgate hitch and its easy to bring with you for a cook. especially since its so frugal with the fuel, one small bag of lump charcoal and a small bag of wood chips and you're good to go.
you might want to consider taking the BK (if you buy) to your next tailgate.

True, but it's also ceramic and stainless steel with a lifetime warranty. You'll probably buy 5 WSM's during the life of the Grill Dome.
Not knocking the Weber. It's really a different animal. That weber won't cook a pizza at 700degrees one day, and hold low and slow for smoking for 15 hours on one batch of lump charcoal.

nothing against you, but those aren't the most independent and non-partial videos...
dude was jackin it the whole time to the GD.
i'd like to see something more independent.
eta: the chef/cook-off part was more impartial.

I stopped by southern gateway on belle chase today to check out the BGE. they are nice nthe one they had set up had the two side tables and stand all together for $850 or $899. Damn that's a lot for a grill. I also stopped at the home depot in gretna but they didn't have any BKs set up (and apparently the Houma store doesn't have any either).
I'm gonna pick up our weber kettle from cocomo's house of love on the way to the bball game tonight and start contemplating charcoal.

I've had my BGE for almost 6 years now. Yes it is a bit pricey but about the same price for nice gas grills. Mine is still in excellent condition and I've cooked on it probably 100 times since buying it.
I've cooked everything from salmon and grilled vegetables to thanksgiving turkey and 12 hr brisket and pulled pork.
This is easily the best cooking apparatus I have ever owned and I will never go without one. I have the large but I also want to get the medium for smaller/quicker cooking projects.

do you happen to post on the GD website as fireguy###?

I do not. I actually don't own either a BGE or GD. I am researching both however.
