Best wood pellets for smoking sausage?

Earlier this year I made a batch of sausage from wild hog mixed with store bought fat and smoked it in a Masterbuilt Electric smoker using pellets and a tray for the smoke. I used Hickory pellets and although the sausage came out really good, I find the smoke flavor pretty damn strong.
Does anyone have advice for a different wood that wouldn't be so strong, or should I just take the tray out 1/2 way through the process to cut back on the amount of smoke?

Hickory does impart a strong flavor. Try using a fruit wood in place of or a mix of fruit wood and hickory.

Thanks guys. I will pick up some apple or cherry next week before making another batch.
Seems like I had read somewhere before to use a fruit wood, but I wanted to make sure.

I use mostly oak with some pecan.

My go to is typically one hickory wood chunk and 3 or 4 fruit wood, for long smokes.

I find pecan to be the most versatile. It works well with almost anything.
