Use a rub that has a flavor profile you enjoy, rub early, then let meat sit out for a couple of hours before putting on smoker.
I cover mine but this is great advice and tiger foot knows what's up. Do is this the method you used?

I got done about 10pm.......so about 14hrs on the cooker.
