Buy as fresh as possible---which means patronizing your local roasteries.

Also pretty sure the grind is just as important. Good espresso requires a good grinder.

Buy some green Ygirchaffe off Amazon. Get a cheap popcorn roaster. Roast them to a medium dark roast and enjoy. You won't find much better than that I say. Also, a decent grinder does make a difference. I use a $100 Capresso grinder that hasn't failed me in 4 years now

Can’t ignore either of these. You have to grind fresh stuff right before you make it. Just like a French press. The beans will stay fresher whole.

Where are you located? Practically every corner of the USA has coffee geek roasters....

I have no idea if there's a specific roast that works best for espresso, though I have seen some beans labeled as espresso roast. I buy beans from a local roaster that I like, and I usually get them at Whole Foods. They're a lighter roasted Colombian bean. I generally prefer lighter roasts.

Houston has a ridiculous number of specialty roasters. Look for one in your area of town; also look at better grocery stores like Central Market...plenty of choices there. And do get a decent quality burr grinder (Baratza is one quality brand for home use).

Your breville barista has a built in grinder which is ok not great but ok. Like other posters have said freshness is important so make sure you don't leave the whole beans in your machine's hopper or they will go stale quicker. I buy medium dark roast beans from a local BR roaster but I have also had success with lavazza super crema beans.

I don’t espresso at home, but lately I have been drinking Ship Channel Trading LINK in Garden Oaks but he will deliver anywhere in Houston same day

Amaya LINK which I’ll get from Catalina on Washington

Boomtown is good too, in the Heights: LINK

First, try a local roaster.

If no one local to you, see if you can find Lavazza whole bean, it’s becoming more common.

If no Lavazza, Internet is your friend. I don’t do espresso, but for my daily drip I use Fresh Roasted Coffee on Amazon. $17 for 2lb bag of Colombian beans.

Edit: just saw you’re in Houston, you should have an infinite amount of great coffee options.

Just use your favorite normal coffee beans. "Espresso beans" and "Espresso blend" are a marketing ploy.

I find that a lot of espresso bean labels are nasty and burnt.

I have a delonghi with a built-in grinder, and I use the community reserve. I don't know how often it goes on sale in Houston, but I can usually buy its 12 oz bag for less than five bucks. I'm not a super coffee snob, so it does the job most of the time...

However, I treat myself when I go to HEB Central market in Houston. They've got an insane selection

Try this company for online bean ordering. Here are some medium roasts:

Amazon Marquis Coffee Ygirchaffe

If you're looking for an easy to get and not too expensive bean, this one is very good. Better than any Lavazza I've had. If I'm not roasting at home, this is a very good alternative.
