I use a chimney, which can double as a device for super high heat sear after sous vide cooking.

Also works great if you want to cook with a wok and make some stir fry.

My old grill, I used the side burner. That's been years and years though. They toss a free local paper in the yard twice a month now, it goes to all residents in our suburb. I save them, ball up 2-3 sheets together, and light it under my chimney. Works great every time.

I’m truly puzzled at why anyone would spend money on starters.

20 cents is worth it to me to not have to go looking for a newspaper and going to my basement looking for dryer lint. They stay in the drawer with my lighter, tin foil, Thermapen, etc. Convenience. In addition, the cube doesn't burn out in 60 seconds. It stays hot for a while, which gets my chimney of charcoal ready a few minutes faster.

Used to use newspaper in the chimney, didn't like fooling with the embers blowing around. Use cubes or tumbleweeds now, easy, no mess.

That's going a little overboard to light your starter cube, no?

Newspaper grocery ads that come in the mail and chimney starter. If in a pinch, I’ll tear parts of paper from the charcoal bag. Not going to waste money on something when free stuff is readily available.

no cube needed. Straight on the charcoal for a 2 minutes and its lit.

use a mapp torch and then use my blower to get the coals completely ignited. It never takes more than about three minutes before I am ready to put the coals in the smoker.

propane works just fine and the cans last forever

I just bought a Masterbuilt Gravity smoker/grill. I found these starter cubes and they fit perfectly in the fire starter slot below the charcoal chimney:

A box was $5 at Wal-Mart.
